Chapter 112: Throw It Away

Nathaniel glanced at the message, his lips pressing into a thin line, his gaze darkening. Seeing the words, "I've given the gift to someone else," he felt a sting and immediately typed, "Who were you sending it to?"

He typed "Encko," then swallowed, fixing his eyes on the words. After a few seconds, he deleted them.

Reopening the photo of the exquisite cufflinks, his irritation grew. After promising to give them to him, how could she give them to someone else? This woman couldn't keep her word.

His fingers lingered on the send button for a long time before he finally pulled back, deciding to clear the chat box and not reply.

Two days later, in the afternoon, Maggie again came to Nathaniel's office. Unfortunately, he was in a meeting. She waited idly in the reception area for a long time before hearing the meeting had ended.

Maggie hurried to her feet, only to encounter Nathaniel exiting the meeting room. Tall and lean, he looked dignified and sophisticated in his white shirt and silver-grey vest.

Feeling her gaze, Nathaniel glanced at her briefly before averting his eyes and continuing to walk away.

Maggie clenched her teeth. She tugged at the hem of his shirt and said, "Nathaniel!"

"Alex, who allowed you to let irrelevant personnel into my office?" Nathaniel said without looking at her, his tone cold and displeased.

Alex was close to tears. The job was incredibly difficult for him. The challenges were simply impossible.

"Why blame him? He can't stop me," Maggie retorted, still holding his shirt.

Nathaniel, clearly annoyed, turned and looked down at her. His gaze was indifferent. "Is there something I can help you with, Ms. Adam? If not, I'm afraid you should leave." His eyes were distant and cold, lacking the passion and warmth from before, making Maggie instinctively want to retreat.

Releasing her hold, she stared at him, stunned. Overnight, he had reverted to the unapproachable Mr. Harris. He was no longer the man who had eyes only for her.

Maggie had never understood Nathaniel, in this life or her previous one. She took out the gift and said softly, "I have a present for you."

Nathaniel's gaze fell on the dark blue velvet box, but he didn't take it. Looking up at her, his voice deep, he said, "Unearned wealth is undeserved, Ms. Adam; there's no need for such a grand gift." Maggie's eyes reddened with annoyance.

She bit her lip, meeting his gaze steadily. "You don't want it?"

Nathaniel remained silent, his dangerous gaze fixed on her, but he addressed Alex. "If you let any more irrelevant personnel in, get your resignation letter ready."

Alex's heart sank; he was on the verge of tears.

Nathaniel turned to leave. Maggie called out coldly to his retreating figure, "You have to tell me why you're so angry!"

She couldn't understand. She realized he might have been disappointed when she didn't leave with him that day, but she didn't feel she was unforgivable. All she did was wait with Encko for Mrs. Adam to get out of danger. Why was he so angry? Why the sour expression?

She had planned to coax him, but now she truly didn't feel she was wrong. She concluded that Nathaniel must have serious issues.

Nathaniel paused. He remembered the photos Beth sent him, and the day she chose Encko over him. His gaze fell, his expression hardening as he turned toward his office. Maggie was so frustrated she laughed.

If he wasn't going to be happy, she wouldn't try to cheer him up. She didn't want her enthusiasm met with his cold demeanor. Despite her efforts over the past few days to be kind, he hadn't given her a single friendly glance.

Maggie wore a cold expression and remained silent. She raised her hand and tossed the carefully selected cufflinks into the reception room trash can. The box clanged loudly against the rim.

The force caused the bin to swirl on the floor before steadying, but it didn't fall over.

"Forget it; I'm imagining things," she muttered.

Then, in her high heels, Maggie turned and left without looking back.

Listening to her fading footsteps, Nathaniel gradually clenched his fist, the veins bulging. His dark eyes were ink-black, almost dripping with darkness, as if a tranquil sea were about to capsize.

After trying to woo him for several days, Maggie decided to stop. If she had previously felt a little wrong, now she truly didn't think she was at fault. His anger was inexplicable. She still felt indebted to him; she'd owe him her life and would die for him to repay him.

While descending the stairs, Maggie decisively blocked Nathaniel's WhatsApp and phone number. After all, she was a jinx; it was better for him without her. Not afflicting him was the biggest repayment for his kindness in her previous life!

Maggie walked quickly. Tears fell as soon as she reached her car. Her eyes were red. She cursed, "Jerk! S**um!"

Nathaniel stood motionless until complete silence followed her departure. His tight grip slowly relaxed. His gaze was sinister, and he couldn't help but turn in the direction she left.

Alex stood aside, silent. He was torn between control and desire; his Adam's apple bobbed as Nathaniel turned toward the elevator. However, the elevator had already descended. Nathaniel dialed Maggie's number.

"Sorry, the number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable," the cold voice said. Nathaniel's lips tightened as he recorded a voice message, "Where are you?" The chat box showed, "Message not delivered."

The next instant, Alex heard a loud bang as his normally scheming boss smashed his phone to bits.

Nathaniel's lips curled into a sneer as he strode back to his office, his expression glum.

Alex stood still, wondering whether to pick up the box from the trash. It was seriously tough on him.

Shortly afterward, Alex delivered a pile of documents and the box to Nathaniel's office. Then, without locking up, he prepared to leave.

Suddenly, Nathaniel's deep voice resounded, "Throw it away!"
