Chapter 122: The Art of Persuasion
"Thank you," Nathael said casually, his expression composed as he clinked his glass against the other man's. "The Harrises will always be allies of the Winstons."
His words brought evident delight to Cormill, his smile widening. "Mr. Harris, you can count on the Winstons as your friends. I'm always at your service."
Amidst vibrant lights and flowing wine, Maggie handed a generous tip to a waiter and quickly found Shawn.
Shawn, in his late thirties, was quite accomplished, considering his current status. Maggie, standing nearby, recognized him immediately.
He was of medium height, with a buzz cut and faint forehead creases. He wore a dark suit with a subtle gold pattern. His face wasn't remarkably handsome, but it wasn't off-putting. His eyes, though calculating, were more attractive than the typical shrewd gaze. His prominent nose balanced aggression with diplomacy. His tanned skin and expensive attire exuded a rustic opulence in Maggie's eyesโthe typical attire of a self-made wealthy man, but Shawn was more than that.
Lucas had thoroughly investigated Shawn's background, and Maggie admired his success. He was adaptable, opportunistic, ruthless when necessary, andโwith a bit of luckโhad risen to the top in just over a decade.
Gathering her thoughts, Maggie walked toward Shawn in her high heels.
"Mr. Lewis, I've heard so much about you," Maggie smiled, extending her hand.
Shawn, surrounded by two pretty girls, was taken aback by Maggie's sudden appearance. He looked up, his eyes showing a mix of intoxication and shrewdness as he openly appraised her. What an intriguing lady!
While not his usual typeโfiery and spicyโshe possessed a charm more captivating than the voluptuous women beside him. A pragmatic individual, Shawn found guessing people's business intentions exhausting. He preferred women who were curvaceous or easily manipulated. He couldn't place this woman in either category. He sensed troubleโsomeone he couldn't easily control.
He stood up, smiling as he shook her hand. "And who might you be?"
"I'm Maggie Adam, representing the Camerons of Aquapolis," she said, a smile playing on her red lips.
Shawn, well-informed about Aquapolis, immediately understood her purpose.
"Please, have a seat, Ms. Adam. Are you here for jewelry supplies as well?" he asked politely. A man who had risen through the business ranks wouldn't rashly offend others.
"Mr. Lewis, you're a smart man," Maggie said, raising her glass. "Now that the Camerons and Adams are on bad terms, I have to seize this opportunity." Shawn reciprocated the toast but remained silent.
Seeking cooperation, Maggie took the initiative. "You must be aware that the Adams have dominated the jewelry industry for years and have a solid foundation. Although they've faced recent setbacks due to supply chain issues, they've approached you hoping for collaboration. But the Camerons are different. We lack a reliable source of goods, and we hope you can help. If we join forces, the Camerons will thrive, and you'll receive due credit. We won't forget your kindness." Maggie addressed their mutual interests directly.
In this bustling world, everyone pursued their own interestsโespecially people like Shawn. His boldness and adaptability had propelled him to his current position. Maggie felt it best to be straightforward.
Shawn pondered. He had initiated contact with the Adams, hoping to profit from their supply chain problems. He'd arranged a meeting with their heir, hoping to leverage their success. The Adams were internationally renowned jewelers and one of Aquapolis's foremost noble families. Jewelry and gemstones were highly lucrative, ideal for smugglingโbut few in Aquapolis, besides the Adams, could handle large quantities. Without them, his profits would decrease.
After years of success, Shawn wasn't content. He wanted more. A long-term partnership with the Adams would lower costs and yield substantial profits. Yet, the Adams were known for their honesty, making him uncertain. Ordinarily, he wouldn't have initiated contact. But their shortage presented an opportunity. Fortune favors the bold, so he took a chance. However, Ericko, while seemingly open to collaboration, hadn't responded.
Shawn surmised that internal Adams conflicts were causing hesitation. His visit to Yatria served two purposes: acquiring goods and gifting the Adams, hoping to influence them.
Unexpectedly, the Camerons sought him out. They had launched several small jewelry companies that failed. Now, they had launched Luster Corporation, a sizable company whose success was uncertain.
Maggie gave him time to contemplate before continuing. "Mr. Lewis, your achievements speak volumes. I'm sure you have your own considerations. I don't know if this is my place, but I don't think your business practices and the Adams' approach align. Even if you cooperate, you might face conflicts. I worry the Adams won't appreciate your assistance and might hold grudges."
Shawn assessed Maggie seriously. He knew the adopted daughter of the Camerons. She had successfully led various projects and partnerships. She was shrewd and capable, rumored to even influence Nathael.
He had to admit that Maggie's words echoed his own thoughts. He wasn't straightforward, while the Adams were honorable. Even wealthy families have secrets, and his values didn't align with theirs. Collaboration could easily lead to disagreements.
