Chapter 19: I Found Myself in Another Man's Bed!

"He still refused, saying there was a problem with the Cameron family's financial situation," Maggie said with a tinge of sadness.

Master Cameron and Ronald showed disappointment, but they knew Nathael was right. Their family's finances were indeed troubled; otherwise, they wouldn't be so desperate.

"This Mr. Harris really knows how to manipulate the situation," Madam Cameron said coldly. "He tarnished our Maggie without remorse, yet he's unwilling to show any sincerity. Does he think our family is easy to deal with?" A trace of mockery flickered in Maggie's eyes. Perhaps this was how the Camerons had deceived her in her previous life.

Even if she had doubts then, she never wanted to think poorly of them.

She remembered the day Ronald and Olivia brought her home from the orphanage. Life there was difficult. Despite the director and teachers' best efforts, resources were scarce, and fights were common. They constantly struggled to make ends meet.

When Ronald and Olivia brought her to the Camerons, they had carefully prepared a room. "Maggie, look. This is your room. Do you like it?" Olivia, in a black dress, knelt beside her and spoke gently.

The room was light pink, a bit gaudy with a princess theme, but new and thoughtfully decorated.

At that moment, Maggie thought she had finally found a home. She didn't expect it was all a scheme.

She lowered her eyes, concealing the bitterness in her heart. Ronald and Olivia must have known her true identity and acted with malicious intent. To strike at the Adams, they staged this blood feudโ€”and ironically, they succeeded.

"That's right, we must seek justice for Maggie! My dear child wasโ€ฆwasโ€ฆ" Olivia's eyes reddened, and she choked up.

Maggie wanted to laugh. The Camerons were skilled actors; each could easily win an Oscar.

"Maggie, what do you think?" Ronald asked hesitantly. Nathael was famous; countless women desired him, and he needed to ensure Maggie wouldn't change her mind.

Tears welled in Maggie's eyes. She clenched her teeth and said coldly, "Nathael is powerful." She had said the same thing in her previous life, sincerely then, but now she was merely playing along.

"Well, you are indeed my daughter. It's not in vain that I've been carefully nurturing you for so many years," Madam Cameron said.

"Maggie, if we plan a press conference and have you testify against Nathael, would you dare?" Olivia asked, her words filled with feigned concern.

Maggie answered slowly, "There's nothing I wouldn't dare to do, as long as it doesn't cause him to take his anger out on the Camerons."

The Camerons nodded in relief. Maggie was still the same Maggie. Last night seemed like a misunderstanding.

Maggie suppressed her nausea and ate dinner at the Camerons' house. Afterward, Joseph stood up and said gently, "I'll take you home."

"No need. I can take a taxi," Maggie began, but Olivia interrupted softly, "Let Joseph take you. It's dark outside, and it's not safe for a girl to go home alone. We've told you to take a car from home, but you won't listen."

Olivia's words held a hint of reproachโ€”a caring reproach to anyone unaware of her true nature.

"I've spent enough of our family's money. Mom, you should rest early too. I'll come to see you when I have time," Maggie replied softly, her gaze fixed on Olivia's face.

The woman had a kind face. In her previous life, Maggie had never seen her lose her temperโ€”not because she never did, but because Maggie was blind, both in her eyes and heart, allowing people to deceive her with impunity.

"What are you looking at?" Olivia asked with a smile.

"I just missed you a bit. It feels like it's been a long time since I last saw you," Maggie replied with a smile, her expression betraying nothing.

Maggie wanted to give herself a thumbs-up. She had spent a long time with the Camerons and her acting skills were impressive. She had never understood how someone could feign closeness while despising another, but now she did. But the price she paid was too painful.

Olivia smiled. "My dear, you must have been mistreated outside. That's why you miss me. Why don't you move back in? We've kept your room just the way it was."

"No, Mom. I've paid a year's rent. Terminating the lease now would be a huge loss," Maggie gently interrupted. Olivia's intention was to keep her under their control. How could she return after finally escaping?

"Alright, I can't compete with you. Let Joseph take you home."

This time, Maggie didn't refuse. It wasn't time to completely sever ties with the Camerons. She still needed to uncover how they knew about her background, the Adams' failed business deals, and Zoey Adam's death. It was better to keep her enemies in the dark and catch them off guard.

In the car, Joseph remained silent, seemingly suppressing his anger or waiting for Maggie to speak. Maggie didn't even glance at him. Maintaining ties with the Camerons didn't mean she had to remain with Joseph.

She leaned back, pretending to sleep, her expression conveying a clear "don't mess with me" attitude, which only intensified Joseph's frustration. He glanced at her again. What was happening with Maggie? She would usually have countless topics and would eagerly explain the previous night's events.

The ride was silent. The car stopped in front of Maggie's apartment building.

"Maggie" Joseph began, but before he could finish, Maggie opened the door and got out.

Joseph's expression darkened. He quickly got out and grabbed her arm. "Maggie! What's going on? Were you really asleep in Nathael's car last night?"

Maggie shrugged off his arm and looked up at him with a smile. "What else? What do you think happened?"

Seeing her seemingly angry, Joseph softened. "I didn't mean to imply that I don't trust you. I was just jealous."

Maggie raised an eyebrow, her eyes fixed on him, a hint of revenge in her smile. "But you were right not to trust me. I wasn't in Nathael's car. I was in another man's bed!"
