Chapter 238: We're Lucky
Passage 1:
Just then, the car behind Leo and Maggie accelerated, its front pressing against their rear bumper, causing friction and sparks. Maggie saw in the rearview mirror that it was the flashy red Lamborghini from earlier; its driver was upset they'd pulled ahead. Leo, unfazed, accelerated, creating distance. However, the Lamborghini sped up. As they approached the next turn, Leo floored the gas pedal. The Lamborghini driver cursed, also accelerating; he refused to yield.
Onlookers at the starting point excitedly commented:
"They're too close to the second car! An accident might happen!"
"The car in front isn't yielding, and the one behind is speeding up. The white Ferrari is at risk of flipping!"
"But he seems skilled; he should be able to maneuver out of it!"
Nathael remained silent, his gaze fixed on the white Ferrari.
"They're catching up!" someone shouted.
Soon, the three cars were aligned, the middle car vulnerable in the upcoming curve. Just as Leo was about to collide with the car in front, he steered to the outer lane and slowed. The road was narrow, typically allowing only two cars abreast. Leo raced along the cliff's edge, surprising the driver behind him. A loud bang followed. Leo maneuvered behind the Lamborghini and pressed against its rear bumper, mirroring the Lamborghini's earlier tactic. As they approached the next curve, the driver's face turned pale. Unable to brake in time, his car flipped and tumbled down the hill.
Maggie recalled her own near-fatal cliff plunge, her severe injuries, and the rescue team's hesitation to approach her exploding vehicle. Leo had rescued her from the wreckage, just moments before it exploded. That was their first brush with death. Since then, his driving skills had improved, and accidents were rare.
Passage 2:
Navigating the twists and turns, they reached a junction and took a different route to the summit. They slowed their ascent, easing everyone's tension. The car ahead suddenly slowed, seemingly to prevent Leo from overtaking, blocking him regardless of his direction. Frustrated, Leo couldn't speed up or pass.
Glancing at the approaching car behind, Maggie said coldly, "Let the one behind deal with it; kill two birds with one stone."
Leo chuckled. "I was thinking the same thing."
Leo reduced his speed, creating gaps between himself and both the cars ahead and behind. The driver behind made several attempts to overtake, but Leo held his ground, infuriating him. The two cars were locked in a battle for position—one trying to overtake, the other determined to block.
The driver behind gritted his teeth and suddenly accelerated.
Bang!
The car behind rammed into Leo's car. Maggie felt a huge impact, nearly being thrown from the car. Leo sped up to shake off the pursuing car, feigning struggle to maintain distance. At the next curve, pebbles caused him to lose control, slowing him down. The driver behind seized the opportunity, overtaking excitedly. However, he collided heavily with the rear of the car in front.
A loud crash followed. The car in front went off course, and the one behind skidded sideways. Leo capitalized on the situation, moving into second place.
With less than a third of the track remaining, only a few cars were left. The car ahead was a black sports car—unidentifiable in the darkness—that had led from the start, suggesting an experienced Table Mountain racer. Leo gradually accelerated, leaving the two cars behind. Soon, he and the leading car were neck and neck, racing cleanly without tricks, constantly overtaking each other.
Passage 3:
The situation remained unchanged until the final stretch. During the last sprint, Maggie sensed Leo's car was unstable, likely due to earlier damage from scraping the mountainside. The other car, despite earlier contact, seemed stable. Maggie silently assessed the distance, knowing overtaking would be difficult on this straight. Neck and neck, it was down to luck.
Then, another bang. The car beside them spun, heading toward Leo and Maggie's car.
"Punctured tire," Maggie said nonchalantly.
Though the car hit Leo's, little distance remained. The other car had no chance of winning, much to Maggie's relief.
"It seems luck is on our side today!" Maggie smiled. Leo glanced at her; she looked flushed and exhilarated. However, he worried about the "Dream Venom" she'd mentioned.
Soon, Maggie saw the flag girl at the finish line, the crowd roaring.
"Congratulations, Mr. Caleb!"
As they crossed the finish line, horns blared, and the crowd surged around their car. Maggie exited with a bright smile, only to lock gazes with someone.
