Chapter 240: I Can't Bear to Keep You Waiting Too Long
Part 1
Tears streamed down Maggie's face, a release of long-suppressed emotion. Nathael was stunned. Each tear pierced his heart. Shaken, his voice deepened and grew hoarse as he tried to comfort her. "Sorry, I'm so sorry. I was just worried about you"
"You're so stupid, Nathael!" she retorted.
The cunning strategist was utterly naive in this moment. Her heart ached. Why apologize when he'd done nothing wrong? Maggie cried uncontrollably, angered by his self-deprecation. She wasn't worth it. Nathael, silent, wiped her tears. "Don't cry. Seeing you cry breaks my heart."
Maggie climbed onto him, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing him. His hands settled firmly on her waist. The car's temperature rose; the rain outside lessened. Cuddled in his arms as they entered their residential area, she softly asked, "Can you carry me home?"
"Sure," he replied.
Alex, the driver, was dumbfounded. It was utter madness! Maggie was acting like a baby, and Nathael was indulging her. He could say nothing more. He pulled over. Nathael knelt, allowing Maggie to hop onto his back. She rested her head on his shoulder. She clung to him, feeling his warmth.
The late-night streets were quiet. Streetlights cast their shadows on the ground. The post-rain air was refreshing. Maggie, eyes closed, etched the memory into her mind.
Part 2
A brief silence followed before Nathael gently answered, "I don't know."
Maggie chuckled. She'd always wondered why he loved her despite her often unkind behavior. Leo had made her feel less alone, but Nathael made her feel worthy of love. He gave her hope, even amidst hardship. Despite her past treatment, he loved her completely, bringing light to her chaotic life.
Nathael gazed into the distance as Maggie remained silent. In his deep voice, he said, "I really don't know. Before we were together, I always hoped to see you. I kept an eye on the Camerons project, hoping you'd come."
Even her coldness and malice couldn't deter him. He simply wanted to see her, even from afar. Even knowing she was close to Joseph, he still craved her presence. He just wanted to see her faceโno reason needed.
Maggie chuckled. "What about after we got together?"
"After we got together, I often worried you might leave me," Nathael admitted. "I feared it was all a dream. I feared I couldn't give you what you wanted. I dreaded the day you'd stop loving me."
Maggie's grip tightened; emotion overwhelmed her.
Nathael chuckled softly. "I never knew I could be so insecure until I met you."
Maggie leaned forward and kissed his cheek. "Those were the sweetest words I've ever heard from you."
He smiled adoringly. "Only for you to hear."
Maggie's heart melted. But why meet someone like him with so little time left?
Her eyes glimmered. "When did you start liking me?"
"Very early," he replied, knowing she might not remember their past. She'd met countless people; he was just one among them. But he'd cherished his feelings for her.
"How early?" she asked, clearly not recalling anything.
"Figure it out yourself," he said, choosing not to reveal it.
Part 3
She thought hard but couldn't recall anything. Finally, she gave up, refusing to dwell on the unsolvable.
Leaning on his back, she asked, "Nathael, have you ever thought of death?"
"People die," he answered. "But if I could die with you, I would be happy."
"What if I die before you?" Maggie mumbled, almost like a drunkard. Her rambling words, though nonsensical and seemingly boring, were heartwarming.
Nathael slowed his pace, holding her tighter. He looked at the woman on his back, her loose hair tickling him.
"I won't let it happen." His resolve was clear.
Maggie chuckled, concealing her emotion. "But it would torment the one left behind."
Nathael continued walking. "Then wait for me a month. I'll look for you after that."
Tears welled in her eyes. "Why a month?"
"I need to settle our children and our affairs before I come to you," he explained, considering their future. Maggie hugged him tighter. "Then I'll wait for you on the other side."
He smiled. "Sure." His voice was music to her ears, weaving a beautiful dream on this ordinary night. She vowed to live for that moment, to keep her promise.
"But you can take longer than a month. I can wait for many years," she said, imagining growing old with him.
With a gentle look, Nathael said, "But I can't bear to keep you waiting too long."
Let's Start All Over Again, Shall We?
