Chapter 251: I'm Sorry, I Broke My Promise
Maggie smirked, her red lips curving upward. "Feel free to give it a shot," she said, "or we could make a bet. Let's see if he'll still stick around once he knows everything."
Maggie never doubted Nathael's love. She was convinced that even if he discovered everything, he would still choose to stay with her. After all, their past lives had been far more challenging, and he had been willing to sacrifice everything for her. Plus, they had the chance for a fresh start. She just didn't want to see him hurt.
The truth could be harsh and painful, and Maggie wasn't sure if he would feel heartbroken and disappointed once he learned about her past actions. She hoped, if possible, that he wouldn't have to suffer as he had in their past lives.
"I'm not going to leave him," she thought. "And I don't want to. Even if my time is running out, I still wish to be with him. Or maybe, before I die, I'll find an excuse to leave. But at least for now, I still have a few years left."
Timothy smiled, looking surprised. "But you should know that your time is short," he said.
Maggie met his gaze. "So what?"
Timothy didn't rush to respond, leaning back in his chair and twirling a string of jade beads, as if deep in thought. Maggie, however, was itching to get out of there. It felt as if a guillotine hung above her head, waiting to fall.
What was Timothy up to?
As Timothy sized her up, Maggie did the same. On his excessively pale face, a pair of pitch-black pupils were deep and dark, like whirlpools devoid of light. His previous innocence and warmth were gone. In that instant, he seemed dangerous and unsettling, menacing and sickly—enough to make one shudder and feel unhinged.
"I still think you should break up with him," Timothy said with a smirk and a sly look.
"And what if I don't?" Maggie's eyes were icy.
Timothy chuckled, leaning closer and murmuring, "Well, then you might end up regretting it."
Maggie shivered, feeling a cold sensation creep up from her feet. It wasn't just the fear of the unknown that unsettled her, but also the fact that Timothy held all the cards, much like when she had dealt with the Camerons. Nobody knew how much he knew, and, frustratingly, she was clueless.
"Do you hate him? What's in it for you if I break up with him?" Maggie's lips parted slightly as she eyed him.
Timothy chuckled. "I just adore you."
His slow, gentle words stirred an instant rage in Maggie, making her want to splash the water from her cup onto his face.
Hmph! Seriously? He's been scheming since the start, and now he's suddenly claiming to adore me?
"Your so-called 'adore' is pathetic," Maggie said with a sarcastic glint, not holding back. "Too bad, I'll never feel the same way about you."
Timothy lowered his gaze, his face growing even paler. "Well, that's upsetting," he murmured.
Just then, Maggie's phone rang. It was Nathan. She frowned, deciding to ignore the call.
Standing up, Maggie looked at Timothy. "You can't dictate my life, and certainly not Nathael's," she warned in a cold voice. "In our past lives, you were just his lackey, and it's still the same in this life."
Maggie grabbed her bag and left. She wasn't sure what had happened to Timothy in their past lives, but she vaguely recalled that despite losing the power struggle in the Harris family, he had survived. After all, as the ninth young master of the Harris family, he wasn't one to go down easily. The realization of his poor health only added to her frustration.
So, did Nathael and I die because of him in the previous life? The thought made Maggie incredibly annoyed. Is this what you call 'troubles lasting for ages'?
Timothy watched Maggie leave. Only after she vanished did he raise his eyes to the glass railing on the second-floor hallway across the hall, breaking into a seemingly harmless smile.
Nathael stood nearby, in a dark suit, his expression cold and his eyes filled with gloom.
"Sir" one of the people behind him hesitantly spoke.
Nathael glanced back, recalling the sight of Maggie and Timothy together. His lips were pressed into a tight line, and his jaw was clenched. He had been meeting with clients, and the contract had just been signed when he received a message from Nolan. Right after that, he caught sight of the two meeting.
Once Maggie left, she sat in the car with an icy gaze.
What is Timothy's purpose? He must know about the past life, so he probably knows how much Nathael cares for me. It wouldn't be surprising if he had some scheme against me. But do I have no other options?
Maggie calmed herself before calling Nathael back. The phone rang a few times before being answered. "Miss me already?" Maggie tried to keep her voice casual.
Nathael's gaze was dark. "Where are you?" he said in a deep voice.
"I'm at home."
As soon as she finished speaking, Maggie realized that Nolan had been silently protecting her all along.
Uh-oh! Does that mean he knows I was meeting with Timothy? The idea made Maggie's head spin. She felt she had to find a way to get Nolan away from her. It wasn't an exaggeration; she genuinely believed it was necessary. If Timothy wanted her dead, there were plenty of ways he could do it. Relying solely on Nolan wouldn't be enough. Besides, from their few encounters, she could tell he wasn't the type to go straight for her throat.
"Nathael" Maggie seemed to want to say more, but she didn't know how to begin.
Nathael lowered his gaze, concealing the pain in his eyes. "I'm at the Westin Hotel."
Maggie was stunned. He he's there too? At that moment, Maggie understood that Timothy had deliberately chosen this location! So Nathael must have seen them.
"I'm sorry," Maggie murmured after a moment of silence.
Nathael's voice was low. "Am I not worth trusting?"
Maggie fell silent, feeling a heaviness in her heart.
"Why did you meet him? You promised me," Nathael said, seeking an explanation.
Maggie hesitated, unsure how to explain.
Should I tell him we were both reincarnated? Should I tell him Timothy used my past to blackmail me? Should I bring up the pain I caused him in the previous life?
Yes, I did promise him, and now I broke my promise.
After a long silence, she finally said, "I'm sorry, I didn't keep my word."
Nathael waited patiently, but when he heard her response, he chuckled bitterly before hanging up.
