Chapter 258: The One and Only
Ben's mother's surgery cost approximately $120,000. Even after accounting for nutritional supplements and post-operative care, the $150,000 wouldn't cover everything. However, having failed his mission, he'd only received a $75,000 deposit. He pressed Maggie, hoping his employer would recognize his quick thinking and pay the balance. This was especially crucial given the unfolding situation.
His reputation was already damaged; therefore, he considered shouldering the blame. Perhaps they wouldn't withhold the remaining payment if the mastermind remained protected.
However, having angered Maggie, even if he exposed the instigator, she was unlikely to pay him. Furthermore, the mastermind wouldn't let him off easily and would likely send someone after him. Therefore, protecting the mastermind seemed wiser—at least then he'd only have one adversary. He hoped this action would ensure his mother's surgery could proceed.
Nathael ordered coldly, "Alex, spread my decree. All hospitals in Aquapolis are forbidden from treating Ben or his mother. Disobedience will be considered an act of war."
The announcement sent shockwaves through the crowd. Ben collapsed, his face ashen. Ronald, stunned, instinctively looked at Nathael. Nathael's stern expression and sharp gaze left no doubt about his resolve.
People struggled to comprehend his lengths to protect Maggie. Someone speculated, "What's the story with this woman? Isn't she the Camerons' adopted daughter? How is this, Mr. Harris?"
"She's adopted by the Camerons, but I heard she and Mr. Harris were friends. She even held a press conference to clear his name," another responded.
"But they seem to be more than friends," someone else added.
"Wasn't there talk of the Harrises allying with the Brays through marriage? What happened to that?"
"It's unclear. There's been no official engagement. But Mr. Harris defending Maggie suggests his feelings are genuine."
"Exactly! I've never seen Mr. Harris defend a woman like this. Remember earlier? Maggie twisted her ankle, and Mr. Harris helped her change her shoes." Many eyes turned to Maggie's feet, confirming the observation. Some looked sympathetically at Beth, the Bray family's intended bride for Nathael.
Alex responded promptly, "Yes, Mr. Harris."
Nathael approached Ben, his gaze intense and scrutinizing. He said coldly, "Don't be naive enough to think money guarantees treatment." Ben trembled under Nathael's imposing presence and intimidating gaze. Maggie remained calm, assessing the situation. It was time to act.
She and Nathael had employed a combination of subtle and forceful tactics. Ben's concern for his mother led her to believe he would confess. She saw Beth's pale, expressionless face in the crowd. Their eyes met, and Maggie sensed defiance. Maggie responded with a mocking smile.
Immediately, Ben gritted his teeth and pointed at Beth. "It was her! She instructed me! She was upstairs, behind Ms. Adam!" Beth's face paled, and she protested, "Nonsense! I don't know you!"
Maggie's smile widened. "With witnesses, he specifically identifies Ms. Bray. Amusing."
Beth remained composed. "Stick to the facts, Maggie. You might bully a waiter, but you can't pin this on me with just words!"
Maggie laughed. "Ms. Bray can't tell right from wrong? The evidence is conclusive, and he's confessed. Are you accusing me of bullying? Do I need to be the one rolling down the stairs, bloodied and bruised, for you to believe it?"
Beth's face turned ashen. "That's not what I mean. You've pressured him; it looks like intimidation."
Maggie arched an eyebrow. "Intimidation? The guests can attest to my rationality and empathy. On whose authority am I bullying anyone?" Beth looked instinctively towards Nathael. She knew Maggie was using Nathael's influence, but admitting it was impossible, especially since he'd publicly defended Maggie. Confessing would damage her reputation.
Maggie pressed on, "Isn't it strange? Ms. Bray wanted to keep me away from Mr. Harris, and now someone tries to harm me. A terrifying coincidence."
Beth retorted, trying to assert dominance and portray Maggie as delusional, "Maggie, your accusation is weak. Many women admire Nathael. This isn't necessary."
Maggie didn't bother defending herself. She let Beth have her say; denying her that would be cruel.
Nathael, however, wouldn't tolerate it any longer. He turned to Beth, declaring firmly, "Ms. Bray, show respect. I love Maggie, and for over twenty years, she's been the only one."
Nathael's public confession surprised Maggie. She was lost in his unwavering gaze, a rare sight in such a public setting. His words were sincere and determined. Maggie's eyes welled up. "Nathael, meeting you in this lifetime must be a great fortune spanning many lifetimes. But what have I done to deserve such a fortune?"
