Chapter 284: If God Shows Mercy to Mankind
Soft morning sunlight filtered through the windows, casting a radiant glow across the bedroom. "What do you want?" Maggie asked, her gaze calm and composed. The sunlight illuminated her face, enhancing her delicate features.
Timothy didn't answer directly. Instead, he suggested, "Have you heard of the famous fountain on Parbo Hill? Legend says that if you climb to the summit and make a sincere wish at the fountain, your misfortunes will be alleviated and your wishes fulfilled. Would you like to go see it?"
Maggie disliked his evasive and inscrutable manner; it felt like a slow, torturous execution, making his intentions impossible to decipher.
As if reading her thoughts, Timothy smiled softly. "Don't you have any wishes? I'm just looking for someone to accompany me," he said warmly.
This was the most absurd reason Maggie had ever heard. He'd dragged her here just for company on a climb! Looking at his pale, harmless face and the melancholy in his beautiful eyes, she felt a sudden urge to bash his head in.
"I'm not interested in climbing mountains," she said coldly. "We're adults; let's be direct. What do you want?"
Timothy seemed disappointed. He sighed. "Maggie, you're dying. Don't you have any wishes?"
He approached the French window, gazing at the rising sun. He seemed fragile, as if he might break with the slightest touch, yet a chilling darkness surrounded him, making him both contradictory and enigmatic.
Maggie struggled to understand her feelings for him. He seemed torn between light and shadow. Did she have any wishes?
Of course, she did.
After a long silence, she spoke, her voice hoarse. "I don't believe in God."
Timothy responded quietly, "Yet, the gods have given you a chance to start anew."
Maggie was speechless.
Just then, Timothy's phone rang. His pale fingers answered the call deliberately. Maggie, standing nearby, overheard the caller: "Mr. Timothy, Mr. Nathael has arrived."
Maggie's heart clenched. She wanted to move, instinctively. Before hanging up, Timothy turned, as if with eyes in the back of his head. "Maggie, do you remember the explosion in Alosea?" he asked.

A chemical plant in Alosea had improperly stored materials, causing a massive explosion that released toxic gases, affecting many civilians.
Maggie, preoccupied with strategizing for the Camerons, hadn't paid much attention at the time. She knew some details of the sensational news: over twenty deaths, more than thirty injuries, and severe repercussions for the responsible officials.
Recalling the timing, she realized the accident had occurred around this time.
Was Timothy implying?
The thought made her look up. Her eyes reddening, she asked in a raspy voice, "You plan to use me as bait to lure Nathael to that chemical plant!"
Timothy said nothing, only smiled. "So, you do remember the incident," he said.
Maggie lunged forward, grabbing his shirt, her eyes icy. "Timothy, if you dare harm him, I'll drag you to hell with me, even if it kills me!"
Timothy grinned, wrapping an arm around her waist and leaning close. His face was eerie and insane. "But Maggie, you dragged him to hell with you in a past life." His breath on her ear made her shudder. Her throat tightened.
She didn't dodge, meeting his gaze with reddened eyes. His scent felt unnervingly strange.
Timothy smiled gently, his eyes fixed on her, awaiting her response.
Maggie snatched the phone, violently pushing him away.
Calmly, he explained, "I sent him a video of you bound in the factory. He's already located the site."
With trembling hands, Maggie tried to call Nathael.
But his calm demeanor suggested a more complicated situation. She found the battery removed. The phone was useless.
"The weather's pleasant. Let's go for a hike," Timothy suggested slowly.
"What's the use of praying if you don't believe? God wouldn't forgive someone like you," Maggie retorted.
"How can you be so certain I'm not a believer? Or do you know what kind of person I am?" Timothy chuckled.
Maggie didn't respond. She couldn't understand his behavior or his character.

His actions, however, were erraticโfar from ordinary.
Quietly, she calmed herself, lowering her gaze. There had to be a way out. She needed to warn Nathael.
Without knowing the exact time of the incident, she couldn't tell him to avoid the factory.
"If God shows mercy to mankind, I'm willing to show Nathael mercy," Timothy murmured softly.
Her eyes welling up, Maggie replied slowly, "Okay, let's climb the mountain."
Timothy smiled and arranged for Maggie to change into hiking clothes.
Once he left, Maggie searched for something sharp. The sharpest item was a large shard of glass from a broken makeup mirror.
As Timothy examined a brooch she'd intended for Nathael, Maggie, in a hoodie and sweatpants, emerged.
"That's an interesting design. Is this for Nathael?" Timothy asked softly, touching the pin.
The brooch looked out of place in his hands. Maggie met his gaze. "Give it back to me."
Raising an eyebrow, Timothy, with a lazy, slightly weary posture, commented, "Nathael will surely appreciate it."
Unsure of his intentions, Maggie was about to respond when Timothy pocketed the brooch and straightened. "Let's go. We should reach the summit before noon."
As the brooch disappeared, Maggie felt a tightness in her chest, but knew it wasn't the time to confront him.
Following Timothy, she noticed Samuel, a serious-looking young man (under thirty), and several armed foreign mercenaries watching them.
