Chapter 35

Catherine considered Felicia's words before replying, "A dowry of one and a half million dollars is insignificant. We don't lack such funds. What's crucial is building a relationship with the Horsfields. It would be advantageous if Diane married into their family."

"Yes! Exactly!" Felicia's eyes lit up. After Diane's expulsion from the Shanahan home, the Shanahans reclaimed the money in her bank account.

Felicia, William, and Megan remained in the Shanahan household but were marginalized by Stanley.

William, never particularly capable, worked in the company warehouse. His already low salary was further slashed by Stanley, who constantly found reasons for deductions, leaving William with a pittance.

Felicia was unemployed, spending her time playing bridge.

Megan, recently graduated, had yet to find suitable employment. Having enjoyed a comfortable life during Diane's tenure as general manager, she looked down upon ordinary jobs.

Without Diane's income, their family's finances plummeted. Stanley even confiscated the company car provided to them. The constant manipulation was frustrating.

Felicia coveted the potential million-dollar dowry, believing it would significantly improve their circumstances.

While the Shanahans provided a monthly allowance, the few hundred dollars were insufficient for Felicia and Megan, accustomed to a luxurious lifestyle. The paltry sum barely covered their handbag purchases.

During Diane's time as general manager, they received over $10,000 monthly, and Diane's salary reached tens of thousands. After Diane's dismissal, their bank accounts were frozen, and the money was reclaimed by the company. Felicia and Megan's lifestyle underwent a dramatic change overnight. Therefore, Felicia was eager to marry Diane to Edward.

However, the old lady's next comment surprised her.

"I've heard Edward is a terrible person—a womanizer who constantly frolics with other women despite being married! Since Severin's relationship with Henry is unclear, I believe it's best to persuade Severin and Diane to return and live with us."

Felicia protested anxiously, "But Henry only invited Severin to a meal. How strong could their relationship be? Let's not forget Severin's ex-convict status. What benefits could we possibly gain from him?"

Catherine's face tightened. "Then why, pray tell, did Henry invite Severin instead of us?"

Felicia was speechless.

George frowned, a thought occurring to him. "Mom, are you considering leveraging Severin's relationship with Henry to secure the Liberty City project?"

The old lady nodded. "Liberty City, a commercial project developed by the Longhorn family, is a highly sought-after investment. Many wealthy families and businessmen are vying for a spot. Securing this project would yield long-term profits exceeding tens of millions."

Excitement flickered in Catherine's eyes. "Securing this project would solidify our position as a third-tier upper-class family, potentially elevating us to second-tier status in the coming years."

"Right! Why didn't I think of that?" George exclaimed, slapping his forehead. "We previously contacted the project's lead, but were ignored. They cited our recent third-tier status and lack of competitiveness. But a strong relationship with Henry changes everything!"

Catherine agreed. "Yes, but Severin's relationship with Henry remains uncertain. Are they merely acquaintances, or close friends? If the latter, we have a chance! We'll have Severin mention it to Henry. Then everything will fall into place!"
