Chapter 20: Emmanuel Gets Drunk
“Mr. Webber, I know you and your friends need the income, but these are two different matters. Terence Group shouldn’t be the one paying for this.”
Samuel’s head throbbed at those words; the veins in his temples bulged.
Just then, Emmanuel said, “However, our boss empathizes with you and is willing to pay three million to be friends with all of you.”
“W-What—?” Samuel’s pupils dilated. He was stunned.
Even his subordinates exchanged delighted glances. They never expected the boss of Terence Group to be so generous.
Alas, they were blissfully unaware that Emmanuel had secretly reduced their payment. They gladly called Emmanuel their friend, a typical scenario of being grateful to someone who had betrayed them.
“Very well. We shall be friends with Terence Group. Come on! Let’s have a toast!”
Samuel toasted Emmanuel. It was clear the former had submitted himself.
“Cheers!”
As a former soldier, Emmanuel had no fear of hard liquor. Samuel’s loyal subordinates, seeing Emmanuel’s generosity, toasted and praised him.
Samuel grew wary as he watched Emmanuel down glass after glass of hard liquor without issue. This man’s not someone to be trifled with. We can only be friends, never enemies.
Half an hour later, Mackenzie arrived at The Paradise and quickly exited her car, followed by four professional bodyguards. Her gaze was piercing, her aura domineering. The men outside the nightclub cleared a path as she entered, captivated by her beauty and power.
Nonetheless, Mackenzie ignored the bystanders and walked straight into the nightclub. She had never been so worried about someone, let alone a man. Even she found the situation unbelievable. Similarly, it was the bodyguards’ first time seeing their usually indifferent CEO behave like this. They wondered who she was there to see.
In the next second, Mackenzie stopped and fixed her eyes on two men exiting the nightclub. Emmanuel, arm around Sheldon’s shoulder, had a cigarette in his mouth and was struggling to walk straight.
He was not only injured but had also drunk over twenty glasses of sixty-percent alcohol imported wine. It was no wonder he was unsteady.
Sheldon was taken aback by the beautiful woman with slender legs standing before him. He couldn’t look away or move an inch. He never expected to find someone more beautiful than Elena.
When Emmanuel saw Sheldon stop, he looked up and noticed Mackenzie. He shuddered and sobered up slightly. They stared at each other in silence. Though clueless about their relationship, Sheldon sensed the dynamic and immediately backed away. The four bodyguards dared not approach without Mackenzie’s order.
Suddenly, Emmanuel lost his balance. Mackenzie instinctively rushed forward to help him up, feeling the warmth of his body and the stench of alcohol and violence on him. He fought with others again.
“Aren’t you afraid of death?” Mackenzie chided, her brows furrowed. A bitter feeling crept into her heart.
“Am I not fine now?” Emmanuel laughed, relief washing over him. Mackenzie sighed at his mindless state. I can’t believe he actually went to such lengths because of what I said.
The four bodyguards were confounded, knowing Mackenzie’s misandry and her aversion to physical contact with men. Seeing her support Emmanuel was shocking. She even gestured for them to leave.
She still didn’t want Emmanuel to discover her real identity.
“Remember what you promised me. Once the project is a success, we have to go home to see my mom.”
