Chapter 48

Terence Group was the leading enterprise in Yeringham. Every office worker wanted to join the company.

Emmanuel casually flipped through several résumés while submitting his own. He realized that most applicants held bachelor's degrees from local or international universities. Some were even postgraduates.

"This is ridiculous!" he thought. "It's just an errand-boy position, and the benefits aren't that great." Still, it attracted many talented applicants. It seemed many wanted to use the position as a stepping stone to join Terence Group.

Compared to the other applicants, Emmanuel's résumé was unimpressive, and his skills didn't match up. As he set his résumé down, he heard a familiar voice.

"Haha! Even an illiterate person wants to join Terence Group. He's totally building castles in the air."

Emmanuel turned to see Milani's brother, Jacob. Although Jacob was something of a ruffian, he held a bachelor's degree and wanted to try his luck at Terence Group. If accepted, he could work with Milani.

Jacob's words sparked hushed discussions among the young people nearby.

"Haha! A high school graduate is joining the fun, eh?"

"Don't make fun of others. Perhaps he just returned from serving in the army."

"He should just apply for the security guard position with his qualifications. Why bother wasting everyone's time?"

Emmanuel appeared impassive, but deep down, a myriad of emotions churned within him. He hadn't chosen to join the army; he hadn't done well in school. Guarding the front lines and protecting the country was a Lowe family tradition. His father had died young, sacrificing himself for the nation.

If not for a mistake he'd made in the Northern Region, Emmanuel wouldn't have returned to Yeringham with such resentment. Now, his résumé paled in comparison to the others.

Unexpectedly, he passed the first interview simply by submitting his résumé. While waiting in the lounge for his final interview, he spotted another familiar face.

"Mom? Why are you here?" Emmanuel called out.

Jacob and the others, who had been staring at him, whispered, "Not only is he a high school graduate, but he brought his mother along, too."

"This is really crazy and embarrassing!"

"Hmph. Is he trying to get hired with such qualifications? Dream on."

Emmanuel's anger flared, but he ignored them. He quickly approached Alessandra and asked, "Mom, shouldn't you be resting in the ward? Why are you here?"

Alessandra, who had been trying to avoid him, sighed and explained, "You didn't give your wife a betrothal gift, nor did you buy anything for her. Now you're even borrowing money from her. It makes me feel really uncomfortable. Anyway, I heard they're hiring cleaners here, and the benefits are better than most other places. That's why I'm here."

Emmanuel's heart ached. He'd previously been unconcerned with money, but recently, he'd come to understand the pain of poverty. His fifty-seven-year-old mother, despite her illness, was working for his marriage.

Jacob snickered. "Do they really think this will work?"

"They're just wasting their time."

"Terence Group is not a charity organization. You guys should stop wasting your time."

The young people around them thought the pair were putting on a show to gain sympathy. How embarrassing.

Just then, a professionally dressed woman asked loudly, "Is Alessandra Cadigan here?"

"Yes! I'm here!" Alessandra quickly raised her hand and hurried over, suppressing her pain.

"You've been accepted. You may come to work the day after tomorrow."

"Huh? Okay. Thank you! Thank you so much!" Alessandra thanked profusely.

Jacob was speechless. The young people's mouths gaped open, even though they didn't know what position she had interviewed for. They never imagined an older woman like her could be hired by a leading enterprise.
