Chapter 131
The Edwards family was in a bind. Michael, convinced Rebeccaโs return was a simple matter of flowers and Theodoreโs charm, had been loudly proclaiming her as his daughter-in-law, even boasting about her twins. This had garnered the Edwards family lucrative contracts and favors. But the Carters, conspicuously absent from the celebrations, were quietly working against them. Michael dismissed any concerns, certain Theodore could win Rebecca back. After all, heโd practically forced the divorce, and they had two children. Surely, Rebecca wouldn't deprive them of their father.
Then came the Carter family reunion banquet. Everyone received invitations except the Mitchells and the Edwardses. The snub was a stinging humiliation. Michael, furious, called Theodore.
"Dad," Theodore said, his voice tight.
"Theodore," Michael snapped, "The Carters are throwing a banquet for Rebecca, and we're not invited! You two squabbling is one thing, but this is serious! People will think we're at odds!" He blamed Rebecca's immaturity.
Theodore, surprised to even hear about the banquet, simply said, "Okay."
"Remind her," Michael pressed, "that she can't overstep. We need that invitation! We can't afford any misunderstandings." He paused, realizing the Carters held far more sway than the Mitchells. "Forget it. Just get the invitation. Women from powerful families can beโฆ assertive. Just appease her."
Theodore felt a pang of dismay at Rebeccaโs recent coldness. "Alright," he replied.
Michael, ever practical, added, "And have you sorted things out with Jenny? Keep the Smiths happy."
"Don't worry," Theodore replied, "It's settled."
Jenny, though disappointed, had been understanding. Theodore found himself comparing her to Rebecca, a bitter smile twisting his lips. Why couldn't Rebecca be as considerate? He'd apologized, yet she still held a grudge.
A knock came at the door. He opened it to find Jenny.
"Theodore, are you free tonight? I want to go sightseeing!" Jenny beamed. "It's my first time in Aotori, and it looks so beautiful at night!"
"Iโฆ" Theodore hesitated.
Jenny took his hand. "Let's go unwind. A walk might help."
He couldn't refuse. He left with Jenny.
Meanwhile, Gary, after much deliberation, finally called Rebecca. The allure of the Carter family was too strong. Even a slight connection could dramatically improve the Mitchells' standing.
At the Aotori shooting base, Staceyโs phone rang. It was Gary. Hesitantly, she answered.
