Chapter 167
Staceyโs star burned bright. Her posts ignited a flurry of likes and comments; even Beckyโs family and friends, Theodore and Jenny included, showered her with well wishes. They sensed her happiness, oblivious to the past.
Theodore, however, felt a gnawing misery. Staceyโs happinessโฆ a new lifeโฆ without me? he thought. Rebeccaโs love had been so real.
A knock shattered his reverie. Jude burst in, his words sharp: โMr. Edwards, Wyattโs been found!โ
The pen in Theodoreโs hand stilled. He shot up, his face darkening. โWhere?โ he demanded, the words tight. If only I hadnโt trusted Wyattโฆ
โBrighton City,โ Jude replied.
โCancel everything,โ Theodore snapped. โGet me a ticket. Now.โ
Jude efficiently booked the earliest flightโan hour away. Theodore used the time to clear his desk, then they raced to the airport. Two hours later, they landed in Brighton.
โWhere is he?โ Theodore pressed, impatience radiating from him.
โProsperous Studio, Brightonโs New District,โ Jude said. โHe opened a game studio.โ
โLetโs go.โ
They hailed a cab. At the studio, Jude knocked. A bewildered employee answered.
โWho are you looking for?โ
Jude smiled. โMr. Shatner. Our boss wants to see him.โ
โHeโs inside.โ
The studio was small, bustling with seven or eight employees, all working in the open space. Wyatt, engrossed in his work, looked up, startled, as Theodore approached. His face paled.
โMr. Shatner, you have a visitor,โ the employee said, stepping back as Theodore, his face grim, punched Wyatt hard.
โHey!โ the employee yelled.
Wyatt didnโt retaliate, absorbing the blows silently. The commotion drew everyoneโs attention. Someone lunged to pull Theodore away.
โStay out of this!โ Wyatt roared, shoving his employees aside, his voice raw with anger and pain.
The employees watched, stunned. Theodore, consumed by rage, continued his assault, his fists raining down. He even grabbed a chair, aiming to swing it.
Wyattโs assistant, Emily Young, intervened, wrenching the chair away. โStop! Will you take responsibility if you kill him?!โ she screamed, her voice fierce, shielding Wyatt.
Silence descended. Wyatt, staring at Emily, quickly pulled her behind him. โThis isnโt your problem. Stay out of it!โ He was panicked, terrified for her safety. Theodore, ignoring her, kicked Wyatt.
โEnough!โ Emily yelled again.
Wyatt took a deep breath. โLetโs talk outside,โ he said.
Theodore, his anger still simmering, agreed. They left, Emily staying behind, worried but obedient.
Across the street, in a cafeโs private room, a heavy silence settled before Wyatt spoke. โI didnโt mean to betray you, butโฆ Janet set my sister up. She was in love, gave that guy everythingโher allowance, even loans. Janet had her nudes and blackmailed me.โ
Theodore glared. Wyatt gave a bitter smile. โI warned you to trust Rebecca, but you never listened.โ
Theodore was silent for a long time. Finally, he asked, his voice barely a whisper, โDid you have someone call my grandma the first time we filed for divorce?โ
Wyatt nodded slowly. โYes.โ
โYou son of aโฆโ Theodore began, the curse dying in his throat. โRebeccaโฆ she doesnโt want me anymore. Iโve tried, but she refuses to see me. Itโs not just games, Wyatt. Sheโs really gone.โ His eyes were red-rimmed, his voice choked with pain.
Wyatt was stunned, not by the divorce, but by Theodoreโs raw emotion. Does he reallyโฆ love her? he wondered.
