Chapter 226
Silence hung heavy in the private room after the waiter left. Audrey remained calmly seated, her stillness only amplifying Queenieโs growing unease.
Finally, Queenie blurted, โMom, I was wrong. I was immature, but Iโve learned my lesson. Iโll be a good wife to Hayden, a good mother.โ Her voice trembled with anxiety.
Audrey waited patiently, her gaze steady. โQueenie,โ she said, โremember what you said three years ago?โ
Queenieโs face paled. โMom, IโI was young and foolish.โ
Audrey hummed thoughtfully.
Queenie pressed on, wringing her hands. โI was wrong. Iโll be a good wife. Jeremyโs my child, too. If Hayden and I remarry, weโll both cherish him. But if Hayden marries Beckyโฆ a stepmotherโs never the same.โ Her voice cracked. โMaybe Beckyโs nice now because she wants Hayden. She might change after they marry, mistreat Jeremy. She has her own children, after all.โ
Audrey opened her mouth, then closed it. Tears welled in Queenieโs eyes. She whispered, โIโll be good to Jeremy. I really will change.โ
โChange is good,โ Audrey conceded, her gaze softening slightly. โBut once a relationship ends, itโs over. Hayden never truly cared for you. Everyone knows that.โ Queenie fidgeted.
โMr. Hoggard was dying,โ Audrey continued, โHayden, being the filial son he is, married you quickly to avoid any regrets on his grandfatherโs deathbed. Otherwise, with your schemes, you never would have married him.โ
โMom, Iโโ Queenie stammered, speechless.
Audrey chuckled. โIf you hadnโt divorced, Iโd have been furious. Iโm a mother, too. You regret it now, donโt you? A motherโs greatest wish is her childโs happiness.โ Her laughter held a sharp edge. โRemember when you stormed out three years ago? I was livid! Haydenโs the apple of our eye, the Hoggard heir. You were lucky to marry him, yet you threw it all away, making him a laughingstock.โ
She paused, a knowing smile playing on her lips. โBut looking back, the divorce was the best thing for him. He wouldnโt have met Becky otherwise. Do you know what itโs like to truly love someone?โ A pointed silence followed. โOh, my apologies, I shouldnโt have mentioned that. The man you risked everything for hardly seems decent.โ
Queenieโs face fell. โMom, Becky isnโt right for Hayden. A second marriage wonโt bring him happiness. She wonโt treat Jeremy well.โ
Audreyโs eyes narrowed. โQueenie, if you didnโt mention Jeremy in every sentence, I might respect you. But heโs your tool, isnโt he? Do you truly cherish him, or is he just a pawn?โ
Queenieโs face flushed. โNo, Mom! You misunderstand! I want whatโs best for Jeremy. Iโll be good to him!โ
โYou keep saying that,โ Audrey sneered. โSince youโve been back, what have you done for him? You used him to manipulate Hayden into taking you back. Is that your idea of love?โ
Queenie stammered, flustered, but before she could respond, a knock echoed through the room. Their conversation abruptly ended.
โCome in,โ Audrey said in Menterran.
A waiter entered with food. During the meal, Audrey ate silently. Queenie tried to speak several times, but the words caught in her throat.
Finally, after finishing her meal, Queenie burst out, โMom, Iโm not who you think I am! I made a mistake! Jeremyโฆ he hasnโt lived with me since he was young. He doesnโt like me, but Iโm his mother! If I lived with him, heโd come around. Iโd take good care of him!โ
Audrey offered a faint, mocking smile. โMs. Leavey, if youโd focused on Jeremy in the hospital instead of Becky, I might believe you.โ
Queenie fell silent.
โHe just had surgery, needs care,โ Audrey said, her tone laced with sarcasm. โYou claim youโll love and care for him, yet your attention is elsewhere. Your words and actions donโt match.โ A weary smile touched her lips. โQueenie, you said youโd made a mistake. Prove it.โ
Queenieโs voice was small. โIโm not like that, Mom. Earlierโฆ I saw you, Dad, and Hayden were all caring for him. With so many people, I thought I could step away. If Iโd been alone, Iโd have stayed.โ
