Chapter 303

Carly swore off remarriage after her divorce. Ronald was enough. All her love belonged to him, and to herself. Loving someone else felt like too much of a gamble. Unlike Becky, with her supportive family and wonderful new husband, Carly considered herself ordinary. She couldn't afford another failed marriage; Ronald deserved better than another upheaval. A new husband likely meant more children, more responsibility โ€“ a stepmom's life wasn't appealing.

Fiona's lack of help after Ronald's birth still stung. Fiona's criticism of Carly's decision to keep working was harsh, but Carly had eventually quit her job, believing Fiona had no obligation to help. For a time, things were fine. Connor worked, she managed the home. Harmony shattered when Ronald was four months old. Without her income, money became tight. Savings dwindled, and Connorโ€™s irritability grew with each diaper and doctorโ€™s bill. Carly's requests for money started innocently, but by the third, Connor's impatience flared, his contempt a bitter taste she'd never forget.

She forgave him then, understanding his stress as the sole provider. She cooked him a special meal, easing his mood. But the fifth and sixth requests triggered suspicion. Connor scrutinized every receipt, begrudgingly handing over money only after verification. He demanded frugality, suggesting cheaper alternatives. But Carly couldn't bear compromising Ronald's care.

When Ronald turned one, Carly found a sales job, a meager $1500 base, plus commission. She took Ronald to work, testing the waters. Within two months, her sales soared; she earned $3700. It wasn't Becky money, but it was a lifeline. She consistently earned over $3000 monthly, peaking at $6000. Finally, she could afford childcare, freeing Ronald and herself.

Her past solidified her decision to stay single. Her earnings were hers, entirely for Ronald. Remarriage meant potential financial control โ€“ household expenses, family medical bills, supporting stepchildren. She'd learned her lesson.

Focusing on herself and Ronald, her jewelry designs flourished. Her company adopted her work, her salary jumped, and she earned a fair share of the profits. Success snowballed. She became a sought-after designer, a far cry from her initial aspirations. Competitions followed, fueled by Beckyโ€™s encouragement. Initially hesitant, Carly's wins surprised her, each victory a burst of pride. Ronald's proud face in the audience, his celebratory meals paid for from his own achievements, were her greatest rewards.

At home, Ronald meticulously displayed their trophies and certificates โ€“ a wall of shared triumphs. The sight filled Carly with joy, a testament to their journey, a love story written in gold.
