Chapter 5

At home, Rebecca stared at her phone, her heart sinking as the call ended. Debra frowned. "He hung up on you?"

Rebecca immediately redialed Theodore's number.

In the conference room, Theodore smirked as Rebecca's name appeared on his screen, and he promptly hung up again. This time, the call ended almost instantly. Rebecca wasn't stupid; she knew he was doing it on purpose.

After a moment, she sent a message:

"Theodore, let's finalize this divorce. We never went to the courthouse after signing those papers last time. If you're free in the next few days, let's get the license and make it official. Don't worry, I won't bother you anymore."

Rebecca put down her phone. Debra looked at her daughter, heartbroken.

Back at the office, Theodore assumed Rebecca had finally calmed down. He was about to resume the meeting when his phone buzzed with several messages. Annoyed, he checked them, curious about what Rebecca had sent. But as he read her message, his mind went blank for a moment. He quickly recovered, scoffed, and left the room, dialing Rebecca's number.

At home, Rebecca's phone rang. Seeing Theodore's name, she took a deep breath and answered.

"Rebecca, what are you up to now?" Theodore's voice dripped with icy sarcasm. Before she could speak, Rebecca glanced down at her sleeping babies. They were so well-behaved, but it was a pity their parents were getting a divorce.

"I'm not up to anything, Theodore. We signed the divorce papers over six months ago. We should finalize it soon. There's no point in dragging this out," Rebecca said wearily. "What do you mean?" Theodore demanded.

She offered a bitter smile. "I mean you need to come here. We can set a court date, and in a month, we'll be divorced." Then, she could recover and rejoin her family in Hivalis with the children. She didn't want to stay in Maeloria; it broke her heart.

The call ended without a reply from Theodore, but after so many years together, she knew he would come.

That evening, Theodore arrived, dressed in a tailored suit, his shirt meticulously buttoned. His demeanor was cold and authoritative. Debra was fetching water when she saw him enter. They paused, staring at each other, then Theodore went upstairs, brushing past Debra.

Rebecca leaned against the headboard, cradling a baby. Hearing the door, she assumed it was her mother. Her smile froze when she saw Theodore. Her arms tightened around the baby. "We're going to the courthouse tomorrow," he said bluntly.

Rebecca felt a pang of pain but remained calm. "Okay," she replied.

Theodore frowned, his eyes searching hers. He'd expected tears and refusal. He watched her for a while, then glanced at the baby in her arms and the other newborn on the bed. The children were so tiny, so newโ€ฆ He took a step closer, then abruptly turned and left. That night, he went to his study, working until he fell asleep on the couch.

The next morning, Theodore didn't rush. He arrived at nine, reminding Rebecca to schedule their divorce appointment. Debra fumed, but held her tongue. Their divorce would soon be final. She couldn't act rashly; it wasn't the time to reveal their family background. The Carters were powerful and influential. If Theodore learned of Rebecca's connection to them, he might refuse to let her go. Rebecca would be stuck with him forever! Debra could wait. Once Rebecca had the divorce papers, she could deal with him.

Debra watched her daughter thoughtfully. As Rebecca got out of bed, Debra quickly gathered warm clothes. A new mother needed care and shouldn't catch cold. Packing was quick: a thick coat for Rebecca, and they were ready. Debra, however, insisted on going along.

Theodore looked at Debra, puzzled. "And you are...?"

Rebecca looked at her mother. Debra quickly said, "Oh, I'm...a friend of Rebecca's. She just had babies, and I'm here to make sure she's okay."

Theodore was baffled. Debra looked well-maintained, but clearly not young. It was odd that Rebecca, barely in her twenties, would befriend someone so much older. He looked at Rebecca questioningly.

"Weโ€ฆ bumped into each other," Rebecca explained, "and hit it off."

Theodore nodded and asked no more. They went to the Rolls-Royce parked outside and drove away. The car was warm and comfortable.

They arrived at the courthouse in minutes. Debra was excited; her daughter would be free! She helped Rebecca out of the car.

Theodore watched them. Rebecca's face was calm, but her "friend" vibrated with excitement. Was sheโ€ฆ happy about the divorce? Rebecca was bundled in a thick coat and hat. Even so, Debra pulled out a thick blanket and wrapped Rebecca more tightly. To recover, Rebecca needed warmth.

"Let's get inside, don't want you freezing," Debra reminded Rebecca as they got out of the car.

Rebecca nodded, feeling warm. "Okay."

They walked toward the courthouse. Theodore felt uncomfortable, but followed them inside.
