Chapter 59

Scarlett stared ahead, her expression blank. “Why waste time on him? He’s just someone I threw away, nothing more. He doesn’t exist.”

Grace frowned. “Scarlett, come on. You divorced him. It’s not like you both vanished from each other’s lives. There’s no need to act like he…”

She thought back to her lengthy venting session the night before. She’d sent Lorry at least a dozen voice messages, yet he hadn’t responded to a single one. It was frustrating.

“Grace,” Scarlett began, her tone even. “I thought about it a lot last night. Lorry and I are over. I shouldn’t even be wasting my time thinking about him anymore.”

She paused, then added with a faint smile, “If you really like him, maybe you should go after him instead. Though, from what I’ve seen, he’s already got someone in his corner. You might not stand a chance.”

Scarlett’s words left Grace stunned. She studied Scarlett’s face carefully, searching for any trace of urgency or lingering emotion, but found none.

Scarlett smirked. “Grace, don’t tell me you think I still have feelings for that loser?”

She chuckled lightly, her tone dismissive. “There was never any love to begin with. Why would that change now?”

With that, Scarlett climbed into her car without another word. “Take this week to rest, Grace. Treat it as a vacation,” she added casually before leaving Grace outside the building.

Grace watched the car disappear down the street, her thoughts a whirl of confusion. “Had Scarlett truly let go?” she thought.

At Ashbourne Medical, Lorry scrolled through the hospital’s patient records, his brows knitting together in confusion.

He’d been curious about last night’s incident with Cedric and wanted to check the follow-up notes, but there was nothing—no records, no details.

“Are you looking for something, Dr. Olson?” a nurse asked as she passed by.

“Yeah. Just checking on a patient from last night,” Lorry replied, still scanning the screen.

The nurse frowned. “If there’s nothing in the system, it means they didn’t check in for treatment. Are you sure they came through here?”

Lorry’s frown deepened. “Yeah, I’m sure.” He shut the file, the realization dawning on him.

Cedric hadn’t been injured. It was all an act. He’d staged the whole thing.

Lorry leaned back, his mind racing. Should he tell Scarlett? She deserved to know the truth. But as soon as he pictured her sharp tone and cold demeanor from the night before, he hesitated. Would she even believe him?

“Lorry, what’s got you so serious?” a familiar voice piped up. It was Zoe, her usual chipper self, as she bounded over.

“Nothing,” Lorry replied quickly, brushing off his thoughts. “Just something I was curious about.”

Zoe cocked her head, unconvinced. “If you say so. But you look like you’ve got something on your mind.”

Lorry sighed. “I need to make a call. I’ll catch up with you later, okay?”

Zoe pouted but nodded, watching as Lorry disappeared down the hall.

Lorry dialed Scarlett’s number on the rooftop, his fingers trembling slightly. It had been a long time since he’d reached out to her, and now he wasn’t sure how she’d react.

The call connected. Scarlett’s voice came through, brisk and detached. “What is it?”

Lorry steadied his breathing. “I need to talk to you about last night. Cedric…”

Before he could finish, Scarlett cut him off, her tone sharp. “Lorry, I thought you’d learned your lesson by now. Why are you so obsessed with Cedric? And what’s this about you snooping through hospital records?”

Lorry froze. “I wasn’t…”

“You think it’s ethical to go digging through patient files?” Scarlett snapped. “You’re a doctor, Lorry. Or did you forget? What you’re doing is a serious violation of privacy.”

Her words hit him like a slap. He opened his mouth to argue but found himself at a loss.

“You’ve gone too far this time,” Scarlett continued, her voice cold.

Scarlett’s sharp questioning echoed through the phone, leaving Lorry momentarily stunned. When he didn’t respond immediately, Scarlett’s tone grew more impatient.
