Chapter 66
Leroy yawned. He had worked overtime the previous day and was now on night duty. His room was just one door down from Scarlett’s. He hesitated for a moment, but as a doctor, he felt an obligation to ensure the well-being of every patient. He knocked on her door, but there was no response. Leroy frowned as he glanced at the clock. It was just past 7:00 p.m. Knowing Scarlett, she should still be awake. He knocked again, but there was no response. Sighing, he turned and headed off to check on another patient.
Meanwhile, Scarlett lay curled up in bed, her body trembling uncontrollably. She couldn’t even speak. Earlier, she had tried to answer the door, but the sharp pain had been too much to bear.
After finishing his rounds, Leroy stopped by the nurses’ station and gave a gentle reminder. “Please keep a close eye on Ms. Payne’s room,” he said.
The nurse on duty looked at him, clearly surprised. “Dr. Olson, you’re so attentive. But now that I think about it, Ms. Payne hasn’t left her room all afternoon.”
“Do you think she hasn’t needed to use the bathroom?”
The nurses stood watch while Leroy’s intuition told him something was amiss. She hadn’t left her room all afternoon. Scarlett remembered the scene from earlier and drank the soup Cedric had brought her.
“I understand,” Leroy nodded.
Just then, the call bell rang. It was coming from Scarlett’s room. The nurses rushed over, with Leroy following closely behind. As Leroy pushed open the ward door, he froze in shock. Scarlett was curled up on the floor, looking utterly miserable. The nurses rushed forward to help her up, but by the time Leroy reached her, Scarlett had already lost consciousness.
After a thorough examination, Leroy’s expression darkened. Fortunately, it wasn’t anything serious—she had simply fainted from eating something overly spicy that upset her stomach. The thought infuriated him. How could no one around Scarlett be aware of her dietary restrictions? With that thought in mind, Leroy quickly dialed Victor’s number.
“Dr. Olson? Why are you calling so late? Has something happened to Ms. Payne?”
Leroy briefed him on the situation in the ward. Upon hearing this, Victor was immediately alarmed.
“Dr. Olson, please make sure Ms. Payne is well taken care of. I’ll be there right away.”
After hanging up, Leroy let out a sigh and glanced at Scarlett before quietly exiting the room.
Meanwhile, Victor, having just received the news, was about to head to the hospital when Cedric stopped him.
“Victor, where are you going at this hour?” Cedric asked, his curiosity piqued.
Victor quickly explained the situation. Upon hearing this, Cedric saw an opportunity to take action.
“Victor, I’ll handle this. You stay here.”
Cedric’s tone was decisive. Victor frowned but nodded in agreement.
When Cedric arrived at the hospital, he spotted Leroy in the corridor. His eyes narrowed.
“Leroy?”
Cedric frowned as he walked toward him. Before Cedric could say anything, Leroy suddenly punched him. Stunned by the unexpected blow, Cedric didn’t know how to react.
Leroy took a step closer, his voice filled with fury. “Where did that soup you gave her at noon come from? Didn’t you know Scarlett can’t eat spicy food?” Cedric was caught off guard by the intensity of Leroy’s anger.
