Chapter 52
Gilmore's revelation completely shocked the father and son, and Everly.
Peter, the Deputy Superintendent, knew that in police work, evidence was paramount. Without it, all statements remained conjecture.
"Gilmore," Peter said, a hint of expectation in his eyes, "that's a possibility, but in investigations, we need evidence"
He hoped Gilmore had evidence to corroborate his claims. Such evidence would solve the ten-year-old cold case, a goal the police desperately sought.
Gilmore calmly replied, "Brooke once came to our restaurant, heavily intoxicated. He revealed the truth about Richard's disappearance. He said it rained heavily that night. Richard and Kennard argued because Richard had slacked off on a construction project. Richard threatened to report Kennard to his superior, so Kennard killed him in a fit of rage. Then, to dispose of the body, Kennard used an excavator to bury Richard under the school grounds."
Gilmore turned to the father and son. "Brooke witnessed this. Fearing repercussions, he secretly recorded Kennard burying the body on his phone. The video is still on his home computer in Springvale."
Gilmore clarified that Brooke’s drunken confession wasn’t the source of his information; his “God’s Eye” ability allowed him to see the past, revealing all the details of the ten-year-old cold case, including Kennard’s crime.
Peter's eyes lit up. Gilmore's information was crucial. If Brooke possessed the video evidence, solving the case and arresting Kennard would be certain.
"This is vital," Peter said, visibly excited. "I'll report this to the Superintendent immediately. You can leave now. Tell your friend not to come to the station; I'll contact you later."
Peter was fully focused on the case.
Gilmore nodded. "Then my sister and I will leave, Mr. Dunne."
Peter instructed Robin, "Robin, take Gilmore and his sister back."
Robin nodded. "Yes, Dad."
Robin drove Gilmore and Everly back to Springvale. During the drive, Robin said, "Gilmore, if we prove Kennard murdered Richard, it will shock Elmwood, and perhaps even all of Vane."
Vane, where Elmwood was located, had Oakhaven as its capital.
Gilmore confidently replied, "It will definitely shake the entire town and Vane."
According to Gilmore's God's Eye, Peter wouldn't solve the case for another two years. When he did, it caused a national sensation, leading to a three-level promotion to Superintendent of the Oakhaven Police Department. By revealing the clues in advance, Gilmore had essentially altered the timeline.
Back at the Evermore Diner, Gilmore's parents were relieved to see their children return so quickly. Robin stayed in Springvale; the old classmates had much to discuss.
About two hours later, two police cars arrived. Peter and several officers emerged, two escorting Brooke to his home. Many villagers, including Gilmore's mother, Soph, watched. An officer seized a laptop from Brooke's house. Afterward, Peter and the officers left.
Brooke's arrest caused a stir, though most villagers celebrated it. Sophia later informed Gilmore and Robin that Brooke had confessed.
After lunch, Robin hurried back to investigate the case. Shortly after seeing Robin off, the sound of a motorcycle engine arrived. Gilmore smiled; Gerald was back.
Everly curiously asked, "Brother, that sounds like our old motorcycle?"
"It is," Gilmore replied. "I want to introduce you to someone."
"Who?" Everly asked.
"He saved you last night and taught Kennard a lesson," Gilmore said.
They went downstairs, where Gerald was already eating. Gilmore's mother had brought him food.
Gilmore greeted him, "Gerald, looks like your luck's in—a chicken drumstick the moment you arrive."
Gerald, chewing, said, "I beat Kennard for you and returned your motorcycle. Doesn't that deserve a drumstick?"
Gilmore and Everly laughed.
Gilmore said, "You deserve it. Mother can bring you another if you like."
"Now you're talking," Gerald replied.
Gilmore introduced Everly to Gerald, explaining his role in saving her the previous night.
Everly thanked Gerald.
Gerald humbly responded, stating his reliance on Gilmore's livelihood.
Everly questioned this, but Gilmore dismissed it as a joke.
That afternoon, Robin messaged Gilmore: the police found evidence of murder on Brooke's laptop, and Kennard was arrested.
That evening, news of Richard's disappearance exploded online. The arrest of Kennard, a local bully, and the connection to the ten-year-old cold case couldn't be suppressed in the age of the internet. The news caused a sensation.
