Chapter 47

Chase was about to pull out his phone to dig up some information on Brynn’s husband when his assistant’s call beat him to it. He frowned slightly but still picked up.

“Mr. Johnson, this is bad!” His assistant’s voice was pure panic. “A bunch of our shareholders just dumped their stocks. The bank caught wind of something fishy and froze the funds for our latest project. Our cash flow is totally dead in the water now!”

“What?” Chase’s eyes bugged out. “How the hell did this happen?”

“No idea, Mr. Johnson. What do we do now?” asked the assistant.

After a moment of freaking out, Chase took a deep breath and tried to calm down. “Don’t panic. We still have a backup plan.”

With that, he hung up and then, hands shaking, called his dad. “Dad, my company…”

“You idiot! What the hell have you done?” Patrick’s voice was pure rage. “Why did the Johnson family in Eaglemont just announce we have no ties to the Johnson family in Portmare? Did you piss off the new president or something?”

Chase quickly cut in, “Dad, it’s not me!”

The president wasn’t even at the party today, and he’d been super careful the whole time. There was no way he offended a big shot.

As he talked, his eyes landed on Brynn, not far away. A crazy thought popped into his head. He wondered, ‘Could it be because of her?’

“No way!” He shook off the idea as soon as it came. He felt ridiculous just thinking it. Brynn was a nobody. There was no way she could have that kind of power.

“If you haven’t offended the president, why did the Johnsons in Eaglemont just cut us off like that?” Patrick was fuming. “Are you still hiding something from me?”

Chase felt utterly wronged. “I’m not lying, Dad. I haven’t even seen President Johnson. How could I offend him?”

“Shut up!” Patrick didn’t want to hear it. “Get your ass back here right now. Once that guy cools down, I’ll take you to apologize.” With that, he hung up, seething.

Chase was so pissed he punched the wall beside him, but he didn’t dare go against his dad. He took one last look at Brynn, surrounded by a bunch of hotshots in the middle of the banquet hall, then reluctantly put away his phone and left.

“Just wait. I’ll find out who is screwing with my company, and they’ll pay,” thought Chase.

“Strange, where’s Chase?” Kylie had been waiting for Chase to come back, but he hadn’t shown up. She was starting to get antsy.

She thought, ‘Brynn was nowhere to be found just now. Did they sneak off together?’

As soon as the thought hit her, Kylie’s anger flared. She stormed over to Brynn and confronted her, fuming, “Brynn, where’s Chase? What did you do with him?”

Seeing Kylie’s angry face, Brynn was speechless for a second. “Kylie, if you want to go after a guy I already dumped, that’s your choice. But I’m not going to chase after someone I’ve already let go.”

She paused and then lifted her chin proudly. “Besides, my husband is way better than Chase, like, ten thousand times better!”

She didn’t care about that narcissistic, ugly Chase.

Kylie’s face turned ugly, and she was so mad that she cursed out loud, “Pfft! Your husband is just a gigolo. How can he compare to Chase in any way?”

The second she finished speaking, the banquet hall door swung open, and a tall, slender guy walked in. The moment he appeared, almost everyone’s eyes were on him because he was so charming. Not to mention his handsome face and the perfectly sculpted figure under his suit; even the aura he gave off was captivating. He walked with steady, elegant steps, carrying an innate presence with every move. As he got closer, everyone involuntarily held their breath, their eyes filled with amazement. “This guy’s got such a powerful aura. Could he be the president?”
