"This is your boss's car, right? Are we going to use it? I don't think it's a good idea to use your boss's car. And I remember his car being a Porsche. When did it become a Land Rover?" Valerie asked in surprise.
It was because the Porsche was in the shop for repairs after a crash; Valerie had witnessed the accident.
Matthew said casually, "Mr. Hudson has many cars; he rotates them. Come on in."
He opened the passenger door as he spoke. Valerie still felt uneasy, thinking Matthew shouldn't use his boss's car for personal use. What if Mr. Hudson found out and docked his pay?
"Don't worry. Mr. Hudson won't mind. In fact, he encourages me to drive it and improve my skills."
Hearing this, Valerie finally relaxed and sat in the passenger seat.
Matthew looked around to ensure no one was nearby before getting into the driver's seat. As he sat down, he saw Valerie examining the interior with a surprised expression, touching it as if she'd never seen such a luxurious car.
Valerie exclaimed, "The leather seats are so comfortable! And they're heated!"
Matthew frowned, a hint of sarcasm in his eyes. She's a gold digger. This car is bringing out her true colors.
Valerie didn't notice his mocking gaze. After silently observing the interior, she thought, A luxury car truly lives up to its name. Every detail is superior to ordinary cars. The commission on luxury cars is high; selling one or two a month would solve all your financial worries. But Arcton Cars targets low-end customers. The cars are cheap, and the commission is low. Even if I join Noria Group, I wouldn't start in the luxury car sales department.
Returning her attention to Matthew, Valerie said, "Mr. Hudson is a really nice guy. It's good your boss is him, not Mr. Grant."
When did I upset her? She's dissatisfied with me. Matthew frowned. "Why do you say that?"
"Mr. Hudson was tired and sweaty after his meeting, yet he didn't dare to rest. That shows Mr. Grant must be a perfectionist. If he were your boss, he wouldn't let you use his car, and he'd probably dock half a month's salary if you were even a minute late."
Matthew was speechless.
Valerie continued her analysis, unaware of Matthew's silence. He had to admit her assessment was accurate.
"It's hard to find a stable, well-paying job these days. It would be unlucky to have a boss like Mr. Grant. How about we invite Mr. Hudson over for dinner if he's free?" Valerie was still concerned about Matthew using his boss's car.
"No need," Matthew immediately rejected her suggestion.
"Right, Mr. Hudson usually goes to fancy restaurants; a home-cooked meal would be too humble," she murmured, sinking into the seat. It really is a Land Rover. These seats are so comfortable, and the temperature is perfect.
"Mr. Grant, I'm sorry. We're supposed to keep our marriage a secret, but I forgot when I saw you. I accidentally revealed our relationship; I hope you're not angry" Her voice trailed off, the last words barely audible.
Matthew turned to see she had closed her eyes and fallen asleep. He hesitated before gently adjusting the seat to make her more comfortable. When did I start taking care of others? he thought, his face darkening.
Valerie slept soundly. Even after Matthew drove to Slotmond Estate, she remained asleep.
Night was falling. Matthew considered waking Valerie, but seeing her deep sleep, he hesitated. So she can be defenseless.
He sighed. The car seats were comfortable, but she'd surely have a sore back if she slept like that all night.
Valerie felt herself sinking into a warm embrace as she slept. She realized the last time she'd been held like that was when she was very young. As far as she could remember, her mother never held her like that, her father couldn't because of his disabled arm, and her brother wasn't much older than her. So, who
Valerie snuggled into the embrace, unwilling to let go.
She's so light, Matthew thought as he lifted her from the passenger seat. He wondered how she ate so much without gaining weight.
As he was carrying her upstairs, a wary voice called out from behind, "Who are you? Let go of Valerie!"
