Chapter 18: You Will Never Have a Chance
The medical department's Gu Zhaohan was even more popular than the performing arts group. However, Xia Yangyang immediately dismissed the idea of working with him. She didn't want to participate in the campus festival because she refused to share the stage with him. Why, then, were they trying to recruit him now?
Wen Xiaochu explained, "Yangyang, Gu Zhaohan is the only surefire way to beat the performing arts group. He's the top choice for the male lead in the popularity polls. If you don't pursue him, Kim Fei'er will. You need to act first. Considering your relationship with Gu Qichen, convincing Gu Zhaohan shouldn't be too difficult."
Xia Yangyang didn't tell Wen Xiaochu that this might be impossible. Gu Zhaohan currently despised her. She remained hesitant.
Wen Xiaochu was right, though. Kim Fei'er had a significant advantage. Without a trump card, Xia Yangyang stood no chance. She didn't want to be publicly humiliated by Kim Fei'er. Self-esteem was irrelevant; she and Gu Zhaohan were considered family. If her aunt needed help, he wouldn't refuse, would he?
Xia Yangyang agreed with Wen Xiaochu's strategy: strike first. Kim Fei'er wouldn't miss this opportunity. After parting with Wen Xiaochu, Xia Yangyang went straight to the medical department. Unfortunately, she was too late. Gu Zhaohan was in the laboratory, and Kim Fei'er was already there.
"Prince," Kim Fei'er pleaded, "please agree. You're the top choice, already cast as the male lead. I know you're busy, but you're so smart, rehearsal won't take long. It's for the school's honor. Plus, the festival prize is twenty thousand yuan. With our combined popularity, we'll win. All the prize money will be yours. Even if you don't participate, the director will order you to join, as the male lead is already set."
Gu Zhaohan, conducting an experiment, was being interrupted. Impatiently, he said, "I'm not interested in acting. I'll explain to the dean; let him find someone else."
Kim Fei'er pressed, "Gu Zhaohan, are you waiting for Xia Yangyang to ask you because you refuse to join my team?"
At the mention of Xia Yangyang's name, Gu Zhaohan stiffened. He looked up and saw Xia Yangyang standing at the door. Kim Fei'er, whose back was to the door, hadn't noticed.
"Gu Zhaohan," Kim Fei'er continued loudly, "don't think I don't know you have ulterior motives for Xia Yangyang. But be realistic. You two will never be possible. After all, she is now your…"
"Shut up!" Gu Zhaohan roared, his cold voice silencing Kim Fei'er.
His face was grim, far colder than usual. The laboratory temperature seemed to drop.
Kim Fei'er said softly, "I'm sorry, I overstepped."
But Gu Zhaohan's gaze moved past her to the doorway. Kim Fei'er turned and saw Xia Yangyang. She immediately understood Gu Zhaohan's reaction.
"What are you here for?" Kim Fei'er asked Xia Yangyang.
