Chapter 89: Chapter 90: A Good Show
Xia Yangyang merely wanted a peaceful meal, to remain unnoticed. However, Shen Shichuan, with a sly smile and glint in his eye, clearly sought amusement. He deliberately drew everyone's attention to her.
Forced to act, Xia Yangyang approached Gu Qichen with a wine glass. "President Gu," she said, "I'd like to propose a toast."
Gu Qichen remained seated, ignoring her. This was unusual; he was normally courteous. Shen Shichuan watched with amusement, while others expressed surprise. Xia Weiwei, however, was pleased by Gu Qichen's indifference.
Irritated, Xia Yangyang declared, "I'll drink, President Gu. Feel free to do as you please." She raised her glass, but before her lips touched the rim, Gu Qichen snatched it away.
"You have filming tomorrow," he said lightly. "Better not to drink; have a soft drink instead."
This left everyone dumbfounded. Was Gu Qichen being considerate? He hadn't shown such consideration to other actresses with early morning appointments. Xia Yangyang was stunned. Was he deliberately hinting at a relationship?
Xia Weiwei seethed with jealousy. Gu Qichen's behavior mirrored his actions at Old Master Gu's birthday party, fueling her suspicions of a secret relationship.
Xia Yangyang reluctantly substituted a soft drink, and this time, Gu Qichen downed it. Returning to her seat, she observed a mixture of envy, jealousy, and confusion amongst the other guests. She dismissed it as a minor incident.
The actresses continued to toast Gu Qichen, who drank liberally. The director, heavily intoxicated, left early with Chen Yu. The banquet ended when Shen Shichuan announced its conclusion.
Lu Yao urged Xia Yangyang to leave, emphasizing the importance of rest for their early morning shoot. Despite her agreement, Xia Yangyang remained concerned about the still-seated and seemingly intoxicated Gu Qichen.
As she and Lu Yao were leaving, Xia Yangyang suddenly said, "Wait. I left something in the dining room. I'll be right back." Lu Yao, already in the taxi, agreed to wait.
Returning to the dining room, Xia Yangyang found Gu Qichen still there.
