My Sudden Rich Life, Chapter 20: The Rolex Watch
"It's okay, Coach. Let me pick it up for you," Trevor said, standing to retrieve the ball. He reasoned, Since it's boring here, I might as well make five hundred dollars. After all, Miss Taylor is not only beautiful but also kind to me. It's not a big deal to pick up the balls for her. The thought eased his resentment.
Bernard and Grant exchanged a glance and snorted. In their eyes, Trevor was utterly subservient.
Thirty minutes later, everyone was tiring, except Bessie, the energetic basketball coach. Corrie, Bernard, and Grant retreated to the bleachers. Trevor, having spent a long time collecting balls, assumed it was finally his turn to play with Bessie.
Bernard stopped him. "Hey! Not your turn yet. It's my friend's!"
"Thank you, Bernard!" Bernard's follower smirked, taking the court with a high-end racket, ostentatiously flaunting it before Trevor. His status on the team, though merely Bernard's follower, exceeded Trevor's. He gloated over his expensive racket, contrasting it with Trevor's cheap one.
With a sly smile, Bernard whispered to his friend, "Teach Trevor a lesson."
Observing their furtive conversation, Trevor grew wary. Bernard's follower then threw the ball high with his left hand, smashing it with his racket. The ball shot toward Trevor like a bullet.
Bessie gasped, "Trevor, watch out!"
Trevor dodged just as the ball whizzed past his ear. A booming voice erupted from where the ball landed: "Son of a bitch! Who the fuck hit this ball over here?!" Everything happened so fast that everyone was stunned.
Bernard and his follower had intended to hit Trevor, but his quick reaction caused the ball to strike the man behind him. A large, heavily tattooed man emerged. He'd blocked the ball with his right hand, snapping his watchband and shattering his watch. Two embedded diamonds were missing.
Grant paled. "Mr. Ellis… it's you!"
Furious, Maison Ellis picked up his broken watch. "Who the fuck broke my watch?! I can't find the diamonds! Do you know how much this Rolex costs? Two million dollars!"
Grant, attempting to appease the man, replied politely, "Mr. Ellis, please calm down. We didn't mean to."
Bernard, from behind Grant, whispered, "Who is he?"
"He's a loan shark, a powerful gang member. I hear he works for Evie, the richest woman in Jork," Grant replied. Bernard and his friends' faces fell. They understood Grant's deference; they couldn't afford to offend him.
Trevor panicked, but Grant's words calmed him. He works for my sister. Everything should be fine.
Maison demanded, "Grant, I don't care if it was intentional. You're paying for this, or you're not leaving. Who hit the ball? Answer me!"
Maison glanced at Bernard and the others, then at Bessie and Corrie, a cunning grin spreading across his face.
