The young couple joked around for a bit, then Jessica’s computer started dinging and buzzing. She immediately began talking with the company executives. Such a scene was something Chris had never even dared to imagine before. Every time he came home, he faced either darkness or coldness; even when Jessica was at home, she would never glance his way. The two had lived under the same roof for five years but acted like strangers, not even as close as some roommates who shared a rented house. Finally, he went straight into the kitchen to wash vegetables and cook, occasionally hearing Jessica’s voice from the study during meetings. This was the home he had dreamed of.
Until dinner time, Jessica was still on a conference call.
Chris cut a plate of fruit and brought it to the study, but Jessica grabbed his hand, not letting him leave. “Okay, I got it. I’ve handed over the Imperial Bay project to Mr. Hickey. He lost a project recently, and Imperial Bay is one of our main projects for next year. All the teams have been gathered, and I’ve put everything under his command. Just don’t let him mess it up again.”
After saying that, she muted her mic and turned to act coy, asking Chris not to leave but stay with her for a while.
“Stop messing around, I still have food on the cooker!” Chris pushed her hand away and kissed her on the cheek. “We’ll eat soon, just finish up quickly.”
“As you command.”
During dinner, Chris mentioned that he had visited Mrs. Wilder’s house today. The place felt a little cold. Perhaps because they didn’t go back often, the whole house felt chilly and lifeless. Mrs. Wilder also disliked socializing and spent most of her time holed up inside.
“Today I asked about Dad’s death. Mom seemed unhappy. She even said she lied to me back then – that when he was put in the ambulance, his eyes were still open, as if he was searching for something. That matched the witness statements. Mom investigated for a long time but only told me one thing – the hospital had internal problems.”
Jessica said, “She can’t fool me.”
“But during the time I’ve been running the hospital, I haven’t found any problems.”
“Ashley has been at the hospital for so many years and hasn’t found anything either. Do you think I just put him there to work? I’ve already had him investigate many people, but none of them are the one I’m looking for.”
Jessica’s expression darkened slightly with melancholy.
“It’s okay, we will find out. We still haven’t seen Dad’s medical records yet. Once we get them, I can check the surgery details using the codes and review the surveillance. I will definitely find the problem as long as the surgeon is still in the hospital.”
The only concern now was that too much time had passed and the people who worked for the Hall family back then had already left. Jessica felt that person wouldn’t leave. The Hall family had a foothold in the hospital only because of those people they secretly sent in.
To have been the surgeon for her father, that person must have been someone with a high status. Standing in that position, they wouldn’t leave easily.
“Next week I have to go on a business trip. When I return, I’ll finalize the details of the cooperation with Michael. He’s been kept waiting long enough, and this is the perfect chance to get his contract signed. I’ll push the price low enough. For Michael, this really isn’t a perfect contract.”
But Michael had no other choice. He had to please Jessica, so he didn’t try to bring the price up. Jessica’s cooperation with Nina was exactly to suppress the cost of the artists under Michael’s management.
