Roy took a sip of coffee and frowned at the bitterness. He set the cup down and looked at Chris.
"If the remaining money wasn’t paid, it’s probably because they knew Janet had been caught and deliberately held it back—afraid we’d trace the transaction through bank records.”
Janet hadn’t revealed who gave her the task because she had never met the person. They had contacted her by phone, and even the drugs had been placed in her locker ahead of time. Initially, Janet had just been scared, but the moment she opened her locker and saw the vial, she was genuinely terrified.
“She never told anyone the number of her locker, yet they knew. And the drug…” Roy’s expression darkened. “Before she made her move, she checked the hospital’s pharmacy system and confirmed that this particular vial did come from the hospital.”
So the pharmacy might be the problem?
Chris paused to think before speaking. “After the incident, it happened to coincide with the time I was beginning to review major historical cases. I intended to investigate all of the Summit Infirmary’s systems thoroughly, but I’m doing it alone. Right now, only Ashley can be trusted, and the two of us can’t handle everything ourselves.”
Jessica said, “Then focus on the pharmacy. This kind of thing could happen again in the future. We need to identify the person behind it first and watch them secretly.”
“I’ll handle it with Ashley. I want to formally hire Jake and keep him at the hospital. His capabilities are solid, and having him around means we’ll have one more helping hand.”
“Do what you need to do. You have my full support.”
Watching the two of them work together, Roy felt something was slightly off. Maybe it was because he rarely saw Chris so serious and composed, and Jessica had always carried herself with such confidence. Seeing them like this, side by side, created a sense of overwhelming force—like a formidable alliance.
He still remembered not long ago when Chris had sat in the Cosmos with a bitter expression, saying he was already divorced and that Jessica didn’t love him anymore. And now… This wasn’t bad at all. After all, someone had to do these things.
While they talked, Nina finished reading the confession statement carefully. When the room quieted down, she closed the folder and looked up.
“You’re going on a business trip with Michael—aren’t you worried it might be dangerous? I’ve always felt like Michael has ulterior motives.”
Jessica and Michael were going on the trip for a jewelry department collaboration. Michael wasn’t originally on the list, but for some reason, just before departure, he was suddenly added. He called and said that, to show how much he valued the partnership... What was more, the destination was Jelaston, a particularly meaningful city for them. Back then, when they had eloped, Jelaston was the place they’d planned to escape to. They never made it there. Now, they were going because of work. She knew Michael just wanted to stir up her memories.
“It’s fine. I’ll bring Shannon and Eric from the jewelry department. With them by my side, there’s not much to worry about.” She turned her hand and held Chris’s. “The memories of the past with Michael mean nothing now. Looking back now, it was all calculated manipulation.”
Chris naturally trusted Jessica and wouldn’t object to the trip. Seeing he had no opinion, Nina nodded.
“Zack’s shoot is ready to start any time. You’re planning to film endorsements for both jewelry lines together—won’t that be a bit risky?”
“So what?” Jessica spread her hands. “With Jason and Zack’s popularity, any way you look at it, I’m still making a profit—just a matter of how much. This bit of money really doesn’t matter to me.”
The endorsements could only provide a small boost to the Wilder Group’s jewelry brand. Even without celebrity endorsements, the Wilder Jewelry still firmly held a top-three spot on Jewelry Street—its position unshakable.
