Chapter 140

โ€œWhy are you always on the night shift? Normally, you canโ€™t have more than three night shifts a week because your sensitivity drops during surgeries, and problems might occur. You just became a regular employeeโ€”havenโ€™t you told the director?โ€ asked Megan.

After saying that, she remembered that Jake was in Chrisโ€™s department, so it must have been arranged by Chris himself.

Jake was eating snacks at the nurse station, watching a TV drama with them.

โ€œRecently, Dr. Wills has had family issues, so Iโ€™ve been covering the night shifts while he works the day shifts. He said it would last for half a month. Iโ€™m young and can handle staying up late anyway. I donโ€™t sleep much when I get home.โ€

Megan said, โ€œThat still isnโ€™t okay.โ€

โ€œMegan, you work in the pharmacy. How come youโ€™re always at the emergency department too? Youโ€™re supposed to just stay inside the pharmacy during night shifts and sleep. Why do you come out?โ€

Megan smiled a little awkwardly, looked away, and said, โ€œThe pharmacy is too cold. The air conditioning is always on inside. Itโ€™s warmer here. Besides, the hospital is cold and emptyโ€”I feel safer where there are more people.โ€

โ€œNo way, Megan, you actually believe that? Weโ€™re medical students; we shouldnโ€™t believe in superstitions.โ€

โ€œYes, yes, I donโ€™t believe it. Itโ€™s just too cold in there.โ€

Jake seemed to be staring at his phone screen, but in fact, his peripheral vision was constantly observing Meganโ€™s profile.

He noticed that Megan always glanced toward one particular ward. Secretly, Jake checked on his computer and found that this ward housed a car accident victim.

Severe car accidents can endanger the whole body and usually require a long hospital stay because healing internal organs and bones is a major process.

The patient in room 316 had been there for over six months and was a woman who almost always had visitors every day.

Meganโ€™s gaze never left that room.

There had to be something wrong with room 316.

Knowing the situation, Jake immediately informed Chris.

The car accident involving the patient in room 316 was not suspiciousโ€“it really was an accident, but she was caught in the middle of it.

Six cars collided, and she was in the center.

When she was first brought to the hospital, she was covered in blood, and her heart had stopped beating.

They barely managed to save her, but she remained unconscious for over a month.

โ€œSheโ€™s been here for over six months and should be discharged soon. I checked the room; her major bones have started healing. I gave my recommendation she can leave next month and still go home for the New Year,โ€ said Ashley.

Chris looked at the surveillance footage on the screen and split off one window to check the patient file for room 316.

Mandy Milton was a 24-year-old girl.

It was said she was an outstanding student in the foreign language department.

Before the accident, she had just finished an English interview and was about to return to organize the materials, but then she ended up in the hospital instead.

No matter how you looked at it, she had no connection to the Hall family.

โ€œMandyโ€ฆ why do I feel like Iโ€™ve seen that face somewhere before?โ€ Chris held the mouse in one hand and tapped lightly on the desk with the other.

He always felt that Mandyโ€™s faceโ€ฆ no, not exactly seen before, but the outline looked very familiar.

โ€œMandy has always been in Impelia. She even went to university there. Her parents are ordinary peopleโ€“one is a university professor, and the other a PhD in medicine. I think they work at some pharmaceutical company,โ€ said Ashley.

Hearing this, Chris looked up at Ashley.

โ€œDid you find this out?โ€

Ashley flipped his tablet around, showing him the chat history between him and Shannon.

Chris was speechless.

Shannon really was capable of everything.

Right now, the Wilder Group was probably having a meeting about the cooperation with Hurricane Media.

As chief secretary, Shannon was definitely accompanying Jessica, yet she still had time to investigate Mandyโ€™s situation.
