Chapter 275

They only had a couple of hours before they set off; neither of them had really gotten any sleep.

The bed was uncomfortably hard, and Chrisโ€™s nerves were on edgeโ€“he woke up every hour or two.

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll see you at home,โ€ said Jessica as she stood in front of Chris, helping him button his shirt. โ€œBut once I get back, Collin and the others will definitely want to meet upโ€“itโ€™s kind of a miracle we survived.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t keep saying things like that.โ€ Chris lowered his eyes, looking visibly distressed. โ€œWhen I had no news from you, I was worried the whole time.โ€

โ€œOkay. Next time I wonโ€™t come to places this dangerous. Until the area around here is properly repaired, we definitely wonโ€™t return. Even the project team is moving to the city centerโ€“theyโ€™ll have to wait until we get back to sort things out. Our car probably wonโ€™t leave until around noon.โ€

โ€œA few of the injured need to be transferred to the hospital. Weโ€™ll be leaving earlier. See you at home.โ€

โ€œAlright.โ€

Jessica held Chrisโ€™s hand and walked him to the door. Chris didnโ€™t show any reluctance to leave, but with every few steps he took, he would turn back to glance at Jessica.

She stood right at the doorway, and every time Chris looked back, she waved at him with a smile.

โ€œGeez, the two of youโ€ฆโ€ Indya stood off to the side with arms crossed.

The rain had stopped, and the sun was out. After a natural disaster, sunlight like this felt like being reborn.

Indya sighed and said, โ€œBack when you acted, you made us believe you really hated Chrisโ€“like you couldnโ€™t even stand to look at him. And nowโ€ฆ the two of you are so clingy, even after five or six years of marriage. Seriously?โ€

Jessica gave Indya a side glance, and from the corner of her eye saw Anthony heading toward the emergency stairwell. She didnโ€™t close the doorโ€“just left it open, letting the sunlight land on her.

โ€œYou do know emotions and work should be kept separate, right?โ€ asked Jessica.

Indya lit a cigarette, not bothering to hide it from Jessica, and casually waved the smoke away.

โ€œHave I ever made you feel like I canโ€™t keep them separate?โ€

That was trueโ€“she hadnโ€™t.

Jessica leaned against the doorframe just like her, and since no one else was around, she said quietly, โ€œBlakeโ€™s a decent guy. Anthony thoughโ€“just looking at him makes me feel dirty. If you canโ€™t keep him in check, Iโ€™ll just replace him.โ€

โ€œIโ€™d like to too, but isnโ€™t Anthonyโ€™s project team bound by contract?โ€ Indya gave Jessica a meaningful look, as if asking how exactly she planned to replace him.

Jessica immediately understood the implication behind her words.

โ€œThe project is mine. If I want to replace him, I can. Itโ€™s just a matter of how. Iโ€™ll have Shannon handle it. Anthonyโ€™s the type you should steer clear ofโ€“once you get tangled up with someone like him, itโ€™s hard to break free. And as for Blakeโ€ฆโ€

Indya cut her off with a raised hand, cigarette still between her fingers. โ€œGive it a rest. Youโ€™re my boss, not my mom. Why are you so worried about my love life? If I get married and have kids, do I need to take leave? Are you going to cover all my work?โ€

โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€ Jessica smirked. โ€œYour weddingโ€™s only one day. Giving birthโ€“also just a short leave, right? Isnโ€™t it something you can do in your spare time between projects? And besidesโ€ฆโ€ She glanced at Blake, who had just come downstairs. โ€œHeโ€™s an awardโ€“winning actor. The entertainment industry is a messโ€”he might not even want kids.โ€

The conversation started drifting, but Jessica just followed the thread for fun. She hadnโ€™t expected Indya to take it seriously.

She said, โ€œYouโ€™re overthinking it. Blake did say he wants to pursue me, but Iโ€™m not planning on saying yes. Weโ€™re not from the same worldโ€“no need to force things.โ€
