Chapter 275
They only had a couple of hours before they set off; neither of them had really gotten any sleep.
The bed was uncomfortably hard, and Chrisโs nerves were on edgeโhe woke up every hour or two.
โThen Iโll see you at home,โ said Jessica as she stood in front of Chris, helping him button his shirt. โBut once I get back, Collin and the others will definitely want to meet upโitโs kind of a miracle we survived.โ
โDonโt keep saying things like that.โ Chris lowered his eyes, looking visibly distressed. โWhen I had no news from you, I was worried the whole time.โ
โOkay. Next time I wonโt come to places this dangerous. Until the area around here is properly repaired, we definitely wonโt return. Even the project team is moving to the city centerโtheyโll have to wait until we get back to sort things out. Our car probably wonโt leave until around noon.โ
โA few of the injured need to be transferred to the hospital. Weโll be leaving earlier. See you at home.โ
โAlright.โ
Jessica held Chrisโs hand and walked him to the door. Chris didnโt show any reluctance to leave, but with every few steps he took, he would turn back to glance at Jessica.
She stood right at the doorway, and every time Chris looked back, she waved at him with a smile.
โGeez, the two of youโฆโ Indya stood off to the side with arms crossed.
The rain had stopped, and the sun was out. After a natural disaster, sunlight like this felt like being reborn.
Indya sighed and said, โBack when you acted, you made us believe you really hated Chrisโlike you couldnโt even stand to look at him. And nowโฆ the two of you are so clingy, even after five or six years of marriage. Seriously?โ
Jessica gave Indya a side glance, and from the corner of her eye saw Anthony heading toward the emergency stairwell. She didnโt close the doorโjust left it open, letting the sunlight land on her.
โYou do know emotions and work should be kept separate, right?โ asked Jessica.
Indya lit a cigarette, not bothering to hide it from Jessica, and casually waved the smoke away.
โHave I ever made you feel like I canโt keep them separate?โ
That was trueโshe hadnโt.
Jessica leaned against the doorframe just like her, and since no one else was around, she said quietly, โBlakeโs a decent guy. Anthony thoughโjust looking at him makes me feel dirty. If you canโt keep him in check, Iโll just replace him.โ
โIโd like to too, but isnโt Anthonyโs project team bound by contract?โ Indya gave Jessica a meaningful look, as if asking how exactly she planned to replace him.
Jessica immediately understood the implication behind her words.
โThe project is mine. If I want to replace him, I can. Itโs just a matter of how. Iโll have Shannon handle it. Anthonyโs the type you should steer clear ofโonce you get tangled up with someone like him, itโs hard to break free. And as for Blakeโฆโ
Indya cut her off with a raised hand, cigarette still between her fingers. โGive it a rest. Youโre my boss, not my mom. Why are you so worried about my love life? If I get married and have kids, do I need to take leave? Are you going to cover all my work?โ
โWhat are you talking about?โ Jessica smirked. โYour weddingโs only one day. Giving birthโalso just a short leave, right? Isnโt it something you can do in your spare time between projects? And besidesโฆโ She glanced at Blake, who had just come downstairs. โHeโs an awardโwinning actor. The entertainment industry is a messโhe might not even want kids.โ
The conversation started drifting, but Jessica just followed the thread for fun. She hadnโt expected Indya to take it seriously.
She said, โYouโre overthinking it. Blake did say he wants to pursue me, but Iโm not planning on saying yes. Weโre not from the same worldโno need to force things.โ
