Chapter 277
Jake was the most outstanding among this batch of interns, and he was personally mentored by Prof. Rane. It was said that his grades at medical school were also quite good. Chris preferred to help Jake revise his thesis personally rather than let him be assigned to another department.
The road was easier to travel without rain, and they arrived an hour earlier than before. Several buses stopped at the entrance of the Summit Infirmary. Francesca was already waiting at the door and immediately jogged over when she saw Chris get out.
โMr. Green, one injured person has been sent to our hospital and is already in the operating room. Prof. Rane is performing the surgery personally.โ
Chris was somewhat surprised. โThis early? Prof. Rane is doing surgery?โ
Francesca looked speechless. โWeโll talk after you head inside.โ
Other doctors and nurses could leave first; only the senior leaders from the major hospitals remained for a meeting. Just as Chris was about to enter, he heard someone muttering curses softly behind him and turned to look.
The nurse Jake had criticized for standing idly on the ground refusing to help was arguing with a leader from the Fourth Infirmary. That girl was very authoritative, clearly used to holding a high position for a long time.
Without paying much attention, Chris returned to the office with Francesca.
โYou all just left the day before yesterday, and now victims from a chain car accident have been sent to our hospital, plus another accident afterwardโall very close to us. Together there are over a dozen injured. Prof. Rane arrived before eight in the morning.โ
Chris and a few others had gone to support the effort, leaving the hospital short-staffed and forcing them to call everyone back.
That surgery was very critical, and only Prof. Rane could handle it. Francesca personally went with the driver to pick up Prof. Rane at his house.
Despite the heavy rain, Prof. Rane refused to drive himselfโif anything had happened on the way, it would have been hard to explain to the board.
Prof. Rane was the hospitalโs living brand; many people came specifically because of him.
โWell done. Later during the meeting, weโll organize the inventory of losses. After the Wilder Groupโs public relations department and Hurricane Mediaโs team return, theyโll coordinate with you to integrate public relations efforts. We want to make a strong impression for the IPO. I donโt need to say moreโyou know what to do.โ
โGot it. Leave it to me.โ
Chris hadnโt rested long in the office when someone knocked and called him to the meeting room.
The door was ajar. Chris stopped at the entrance and caught sight of the girl through the crack. He paused and called Francesca back.
โWhat is it?โ
Chris nodded toward the girl. โGo check who she is.โ
Actually, Chris didnโt need to say more.
After returning from the disaster relief, everyone was covered in dirt. Jake was covered in mud and went straight back to the dormitory to get a shower.
Chris was in better shapeโhe had rinsed off briefly at Montvue Tower the night beforeโbut after the whole morningโs chaos, his lower body was still muddy.
But that girl looked much cleaner than the others, and her glare was sharp.
โYes, understood.โ Francesca memorized the hospital and name on the girlโs badge and turned to leave.
Jessica and the others returned to the Wilder Group at three in the afternoon. Many people glanced sideways when they saw them come back.
โLooks like the Montvue Tower has brought bad luck. It sat idle for many years under the Hall family, and soon after we took it over, a landslide happened and communications were cut off. I think this project is going to be hard to manage.โ
A colleague tossed a pack of tissues over.
โWhat is up with you? Talking about luck now?โ She turned back. โThere was nothing we could do about that landslide.โ
