Chapter 33
In her memory, Chris rarely came to the company and didnโt like to appear by her side. She had thought Chris simply didnโt enjoy interacting with strangers and disliked those kinds of flashy, superficial occasions even more.
โMr. Hallโs house locks have been changed, and a new batch of security guards has been assigned,โ said Shannon, placing the trash aside and standing in front of the desk. โYou see, youโre trying to hold onto Mr. Green, and at the same time, youโre taking care of Mr. Hall. Splitting your focus like this is too exhausting.โ
Shannon spoke in a tactful manner, hoping Jessica would understand the message.
That night, Chris slept in the dormitory. Without Jessica by his side for once, he slept very soundly. Jake had gone home, so he was the only one in the dorm.
Later that night, Chris sensed someone approaching him. He thought it was a night shift worker coming to get something and didnโt pay much attention.
But a few minutes later, someone slipped into his blanket.
Chris was instantly startled awake.
โWho is it!โ
A soft, boneless hand covered his mouth. โItโs me.โ
Bathed in the moonlight from the window, he recognized the person in front of him.
โJessica?โ
Jessica seemed to have been drinking. Once she saw that Chris recognized her, she let go of his mouth and collapsed directly into his arms. โWhy didnโt you come home?โ
Her soft, fragrant body lay in his embrace, and Chris was so stiff he didnโt dare move.
โWhy are you here?โ
โYou didnโt come home, so of course I came to find you.โ Jessica tilted her head and asked again, โWhy didnโt you come home?โ
Chris swallowed. โWeโre already divorced. Thatโs not my home anymore.โ
โChrisโฆโ Jessica wrapped her arms around his neck, her warm breath brushing his ear. โIโve missed you.โ
Chrisโs entire body trembled.
Just as Jessica leaned closer and her lips were about to touch his neck, her phone suddenly rang.
In an instant, Chris sobered up and gently pushed her away.
Jessica didnโt want to answer it, but the name on the phone screen lying on the bed clearly showed, โMichael.โ
The two froze for a short while.
Jessica didnโt come closer, nor did she continue.
Chris quietly watched, then asked, โArenโt you going to answer it?"
Jessica let go of him and picked up the phone. โIf heโs calling at this hour, it must be important.โ
โHello?โ
โJessica, Jordan has a high fever again. IโI gave her medicine but itโs not working. Sheโs been crying, saying she wants to see you. Iโฆ I didnโt know what else I could do, so I called you.โ
As he spoke, Michael brought the phone closer to the child.
Jordanโs cries sounded hoarse, as if she had been crying for a long time. She sobbed and said, โMs. Wilder, why havenโt you come see me recently? I miss you.โ
Jessica immediately stood up and grabbed the clothes from the table. โIโll have someone pick you up and bring you to the hospital. Iโm already at the hospital.โ
On the other end of the line, Michael frowned slightly. She was still at the hospital at this hour?
โThe Summit Infirmary?โ
โYes, Iโll send someone to get you.โ
Michael looked at Jordan lying on the bed, remained silent for a moment, and finally said, โNo need. Iโll drive her there myself. Is Chris with you?โ
โYes, heโs with me.โ
Chris was still in his pajamas, showing no sign of getting up, while Jessica had already put on a coat and was ready to head out. After ending the call, Jessica turned back and looked at Chris in surprise. โWhy havenโt you changed yet?โ
Chris frowned. โIโm not a pediatrician. The emergency department has doctors on duty. Just tell Michael to take the child there.โ
โYouโre not even going to take a look?โ
โI told youโIโm not a pediatrician.โ
