Listen to this chapter:

Jessica immediately understood โ€“ Chris was trying to provoke Michael.

โ€œFine then, count it as me saying the wrong thing. You two carry on, Iโ€™m going back to sleep. I still have work tomorrow.โ€ After saying that, Chris turned around and walked off without hesitation.

Jessica quickly let go of Jordan and ran after him, pulling him aside. Her expression was slightly cold. โ€œDo you really have to say those things in front of Michael and Jordan?โ€

โ€œDid I say something wrong?โ€ Chris asked with a mocking smile. โ€œActually, Iโ€™m really curious โ€“ if it werenโ€™t for that phone call, what did you come to me for? Did you really miss me? Orโ€ฆ did you just want someone to keep you company?โ€

Chrisโ€™s sharp tongue left Jessica speechless for a moment. She didnโ€™t want him bringing up these things in front of Michael.

What Shannon said earlier was right โ€“ she really needed to think about what she wanted, or rather, who she wanted.

Since Chris was doing everything he could to get divorced, if she made her choice, there was no need to keep clinging to him.

But until she figured it out, she couldnโ€™t let Chris leave.

โ€œGo back to sleep.โ€ Jessica turned and walked away. โ€œIโ€™ll get Jordan hospitalized. Bring them breakfast tomorrow morning. Jordan wants milk.โ€

The next morning, Chris changed straight into his doctorโ€™s overall and headed to the office.

This time, he skipped the internship period entirely. Several patients were already waiting outside early in the morning โ€“ he wasnโ€™t going to waste time on Michael.

He just didnโ€™t expect the first person to walk in would be the one he least wanted to see.

When Chris saw Michaelโ€™s name, a headache immediately struck.

โ€œWhere do you feel unwell?โ€ Chris asked out of routine.

Michael rested one hand on the desk and stared at Chris in silence for a long moment before finally speaking. โ€œWhy do you keep haunting me like a ghost?โ€

โ€œShouldnโ€™t I be the one asking you that?โ€ Chris replied with sarcasm. โ€œIf you really had what it takes, you wouldโ€™ve kept Jessica by your side. I wouldnโ€™t keep getting dragged back by her. If you canโ€™t do it, stop acting tough in front of me.โ€

โ€œYou thinkโ€ฆ I canโ€™t?โ€

Chris was growing impatient. โ€œDo you actually have a medical issue or not? If not, get out. Iโ€™ve got a lot of patients waiting.โ€

Michael stood up and suddenly leaned closer. Chris instinctively stepped back.

Michaelโ€™s eyes burned with intensity, and in them, Chris could already see a flash of murderous intent.

โ€œChris, you forced me into this.โ€

โ€œWhat, youโ€™re gonna kill me now?โ€

Even after Michael left, Chris remained disturbed by that look. He had to admit โ€“ Michaelโ€™s expression, full of hatred, really caught him off guard.

How had things ended up like this?

He had originally thought that after all these years, Jessica still couldnโ€™t forget Michael. The two of them must still love each other.

Chapter 35

If he just got divorced and stepped aside, everything would fall into place.

He would start a new life. Jessica and Michael would reunite after five years โ€“ what a beautiful picture that would be.

Even Jessica not wanting kids wasnโ€™t an issue โ€“ Michael could just bring a daughter with him.

Everything was perfect.

So how had it come to this?

Chris massaged his temples and called for the next patient.

Around nine oโ€™clock, Jessica finally left the hospital. She had stayed up the whole night and looked exhausted.

The moment Shannon saw her, she knew she hadnโ€™t slept. The smell of disinfectant on her clothes made her think Jessica had gone to find Chris.

โ€œSo? Did you go see Mr. Green? Did you two have a talk?โ€

Jessica glanced at her. โ€œJordan had a fever. I stayed with her all night.โ€

Shannonโ€™s expression stiffened. Why was Michael involved again?
