Chapter 56
Jessica was just about to put down her cutlery in anger, but she held it in. She could feel that Chris had changed. If it had been right after the divorce, after what happened today, Chris might have secretly bought a plane ticket and quietly left, instead of sitting down to talk with her like this.
“Chris, I know what your dream is, but don’t you think our relationship hasn’t fully healed yet? If you leave now, wouldn’t it be bad for both of us?”
Chris remained calm. “The reason our relationship hasn’t healed isn’t because of me. Going abroad to study won’t change me one bit. It’ll only give you the time to really think.”
“Let’s not talk about this for now.” Jessica looked away and added a serving of potatoes to Chris’s plate. “Let’s eat first, Chris. I don’t want to argue with you.”
Fine—after so many failed attempts to leave, it seemed Jessica still couldn’t accept the idea of him going to study abroad. Now really wasn’t the right time.
Thinking of this, Chris smiled slightly.
In the days that followed, Jessica acted as if she feared Chris might run off. She stopped going to social events, came straight home after work for dinner, and even brought Shannon home with her.
On Saturday, when Chris had the day off, Jessica went to the office early for overtime and told him she would bring Shannon back for dinner in the afternoon. Chris quickly went out to buy groceries.
“Michael wants to return to the Hall family, but it won’t be easy.”
Dinner hadn’t even started yet. The two sat at the table.
“Yeah, he’s really given me a problem,” Jessica scoffed. “As always.”
Resting her chin on one hand, she watched Chris’s busy figure thoughtfully. “What kind of terms do you think the Hall family gave Michael?”
“It can’t be marrying you, right?” Shannon tilted her chin toward Chris. “The Hall family already knew you were married to Chris. They even showed up at the wedding. Cried their eyes out right in front of Chris, saying their son and you were the real match, and look how things turned out.”
Whenever the past was brought up, Jessica felt guilty toward Chris. They had invited the Hall family to the wedding out of politeness, never expecting them to actually come.
Back then, Madam Wilder forbade them from dating, and truthfully, the Hall family hadn’t liked Jessica either. They thought she was too strong and would follow in Madam Wilder’s footsteps. Their son wouldn’t be able to handle her.
So when the car accident happened, the Hall family had immediately taken Michael away.
Who would’ve thought they’d cry at the wedding?
Michael had already been engaged. He was the one who wronged Jessica first.
Jessica’s expression turned cold. “That’s why I’ll give Michael a little hope. But in truth, I think he’ll be easier to control if he returns to the Hall family. Luke is arrogant and impulsive—it’s clear that Thomas Hall and his wife, Lynsey Hall, are using him as a smokescreen. No matter how disappointing Michael is, he’s still their biological son.”
The dining table wasn’t far from the open kitchen, and they weren’t trying to avoid Chris while talking. He kept busy in the kitchen, but his ears were clearly paying attention.
These were all secrets in the world of business.
Shannon’s phone suddenly lit up with a few messages. She glanced down and cocked her brows.
“That woman’s been found,” Shannon looked up. “Just as you guessed—she’s still in the country, at the Cloud Hotel.” The Cloud Hotel was a luxury chain under the Hall Group. Even a basic room cost tens of thousands a night.
Chris didn’t understand what was going on—he simply kept serving food for the two of them and reminded them to eat.
Shannon, however, seemed distracted.
“If she’s in the country, that means Michael spared her life. No wonder Jennifer said Michael and Jordan have been going out a lot lately, and they never look happy when they returned home.”
