Chapter 80

Listen to this chapter:

Knowing Michaelโ€™s temper, he naturally wouldnโ€™t want anyone to block his way after returning to the country; he might even make a move against Mrs. Wilder.

Chris suddenly picked up his phone and turned to leave.

โ€œHey, where are you going?โ€

โ€œHome!โ€

Roy and Nina exchanged a glance, both feeling a bit helpless.

โ€œWhy are you telling him so much?โ€ Roy sighed and served some food for Nina.

โ€œJessica doesnโ€™t want to talk about it.โ€

Nina casually ate two bites of salad and was full; no matter what, she refused to eat more.

She rested her chin on one hand, looking at the door.

โ€œIโ€™ve always thought Chris was great. Itโ€™s just that Jessica got to him first. Since someone else took him, they should at least treat him well.โ€

โ€œPift!โ€ Roy spat out water, staring at his own sister in shock.

โ€œYouโ€ฆ like Chris?โ€

Nina rolled her eyes, really unsure if her brother was smart or dumb.

Back when they were neighbors, sheโ€™d often run over to Chrisโ€™s houseโ€”was it really just because the food was good there?

He hadnโ€™t even noticed.

With her brotherโ€™s straightforward, typical male personality, it was probably unlikely sheโ€™d get a sister-in-law anytime soon.

โ€œForget it, I wonโ€™t say more. I think Chris was rightโ€”heโ€™s a man, thereโ€™s no reason for him to hide behind a woman. Jessica kept things from him because she was afraid heโ€™d be in danger. I think letting him know the truth is the real way to protect him.โ€

Jessica had just gotten home not long ago and was working in the study when a beep came from the door.

Chris rushed in like a gust of wind.

He hadnโ€™t even changed clothes and directly pushed open the study door.

โ€œYouโ€™re back.โ€

Jessica kept typing with both hands on the keyboard and didnโ€™t lift her head when she heard the noise.

Chris quickly walked over and stood protectively behind her.

Jessica paused.

โ€œWhatโ€™s this about?โ€ Jessica smiled and reached back to hold him, her eyes warm and gentle.

She looked up at his chin and brushed her finger against it.

โ€œMiss me? Or are you angry because you didnโ€™t see me at the hospital today?โ€

Chris shook his head and rubbed Jessicaโ€™s head with his chin, messing up her hair.

Jessica laughed and pushed him away.

โ€œStop messing around. Thereโ€™s a meeting soon.โ€

โ€œI did miss you.โ€

Every time he confessed like this before, Jessica would push him away.

He had thought she didnโ€™t need his affection, but after Ninaโ€™s words, he felt Jessicaโ€™s protection had started long ago.

It seemed like after that time she was drugged at home, Jessica had deliberately distanced herself from him, even starting to sleep in separate rooms.

The feud began in the previous generation and had reached an irreconcilable stage between the Wilder and Hall families.

Even without Jessica and Michael, the feud would never end.

Since that was the case, he could only find a way to reassure Jessica.

โ€œThank you for protecting me,โ€ Chris said softly, like he was coaxing her.

Jessica froze for a moment, subconsciously feeling Chris might know something.

She looked at him curiously.

โ€œWho did you have dinner with tonight?โ€

โ€œRoy.โ€

She knew it.

Chris didnโ€™t have many friends; the Jake she had met last time at the Tesalfield Hospital was just a colleague.

If you asked about friends, he only really had Roy.

The computer beeped, and Shannon reminded him it was time for a meeting.

Chris released her and lightly kissed her on the top of her head.

โ€œIโ€™ll go wash up and change first. Iโ€™ll make you some milk with birdโ€™s nest.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

The computer screen turned on, showing Shannon in pajamas.

Since it was an internal meeting, appearance wasnโ€™t very important.

Indya and a boy logged in; the boy looked very similar to Indyaโ€”almost like a male version of her.

The other participant was Jennifer, who had her camera turned off.
