Listen to this chapter:

โ€œMrs. Wilder, why havenโ€™t you arrived yet? The whole companyโ€™s waiting for you for the meeting. What time is it already?โ€ Shannon rambled nonstop as soon as the call connected.

Jessica, however, kept her temper, suppressing the sobs in her voice.

โ€œChoose the best spot next to my fatherโ€™s grave and get someone to move my mother-in-law over. Iโ€™ll send you the current cemetery address later.โ€

Chris wanted to stop her when he heard this, but Jessica didnโ€™t give him the chance.

On the other end, Shannon was stunned. Her hand paused, holding the pen ready to take notes, and she asked uncertainly, โ€œMs. Wilder, your mother-in-law? Your husbandโ€™s mother? She passed away?โ€

No one knew. When did it happen?

Jessica nodded, โ€œIโ€™ll explain when I get back. For now, find someone to pick the date. It has to be the best spot, preferably next to my father so itโ€™s convenient for visits.โ€

โ€œUnderstood, Iโ€™ll get right on it. Company meeting?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll head back now.โ€

Today, Chris had a day off and didnโ€™t need to go to the hospital, but for Jessica, it was still a workday.

On the way back, Chris tried to stop Jessica. โ€œThe person is gone. It doesnโ€™t matter where sheโ€™s buried, as long as you have the heart to visit.โ€

Jessica disagreed. โ€œMy mother-in-law must have the best of everything. Itโ€™s my fault I didnโ€™t know before. From now on, on every holiday, I will visit her with you.โ€

What Chris really wanted was just her attitude, not to change anything. Seeing that stopping her was useless, Chris didnโ€™t argue.

He sent the address for his motherโ€™s grave to Shannon, who offered some condolences. Though many years late, it was enough for those still alive.

Chris thought of what Jessica had said to his mother todayโ€“that she wouldnโ€™t let him bear anything aloneโ€“and he smiled. He thought, after so many years, he finally got everything he had hoped for.

Jessica drove straight to the company. Chris wanted to take a taxi home, but Jessica held his hand tightly and took him straight upstairs.

As Jessica was about to bring him to the meeting room, he said, โ€œIsnโ€™t this a bit inappropriate? Youโ€™re having a meeting. Thereโ€™s no need for me to be there.โ€

โ€œIt concerns you today.โ€

โ€œMe?โ€

They opened the meeting room door.

Besides Shannon and Indya, two familiar faces, Roy and his colleagues were there too. The young man beside Roy stood up to greet them, but Roy himself stayed seated.

โ€œIโ€™ve been waiting for you for a long time,โ€ said Roy.

Jessica replied, โ€œSorry, I went to visit my mother-in-law today, so Iโ€™m a bit late.โ€

Roy glanced at Jessica; even he knew Chrisโ€™s mother had passed away, so visiting his mother-in-law meant paying respects at the grave. There was nothing much to say about honoring the dead.

โ€œI still have people at my bureau waiting. You said today you wanted to investigate the incident when Chris was nearly killed years ago. Do you think itโ€™s connected to your competitors?โ€

Chris sat beside Jessica, a little shocked. Years ago, he had almost suffered carbon monoxide poisoning at home. After investigation, they found that his tea had been laced with sleeping pills. Chris never figured out when he had taken those pills, and Jessica hadnโ€™t shown any intention to investigate back then, only growing colder toward him from that point. Now, after two or three years, she actually wanted to look into it.

โ€œYes, I suspect itโ€™s related to the Hall family. If possible, please merge the cases and investigate them together.โ€
