โMrs. Wilder, why havenโt you arrived yet? The whole companyโs waiting for you for the meeting. What time is it already?โ Shannon rambled nonstop as soon as the call connected.
Jessica, however, kept her temper, suppressing the sobs in her voice.
โChoose the best spot next to my fatherโs grave and get someone to move my mother-in-law over. Iโll send you the current cemetery address later.โ
Chris wanted to stop her when he heard this, but Jessica didnโt give him the chance.
On the other end, Shannon was stunned. Her hand paused, holding the pen ready to take notes, and she asked uncertainly, โMs. Wilder, your mother-in-law? Your husbandโs mother? She passed away?โ
No one knew. When did it happen?
Jessica nodded, โIโll explain when I get back. For now, find someone to pick the date. It has to be the best spot, preferably next to my father so itโs convenient for visits.โ
โUnderstood, Iโll get right on it. Company meeting?โ
โIโll head back now.โ
Today, Chris had a day off and didnโt need to go to the hospital, but for Jessica, it was still a workday.
On the way back, Chris tried to stop Jessica. โThe person is gone. It doesnโt matter where sheโs buried, as long as you have the heart to visit.โ
Jessica disagreed. โMy mother-in-law must have the best of everything. Itโs my fault I didnโt know before. From now on, on every holiday, I will visit her with you.โ
What Chris really wanted was just her attitude, not to change anything. Seeing that stopping her was useless, Chris didnโt argue.
He sent the address for his motherโs grave to Shannon, who offered some condolences. Though many years late, it was enough for those still alive.
Chris thought of what Jessica had said to his mother todayโthat she wouldnโt let him bear anything aloneโand he smiled. He thought, after so many years, he finally got everything he had hoped for.
Jessica drove straight to the company. Chris wanted to take a taxi home, but Jessica held his hand tightly and took him straight upstairs.
As Jessica was about to bring him to the meeting room, he said, โIsnโt this a bit inappropriate? Youโre having a meeting. Thereโs no need for me to be there.โ
โIt concerns you today.โ
โMe?โ
They opened the meeting room door.

Besides Shannon and Indya, two familiar faces, Roy and his colleagues were there too. The young man beside Roy stood up to greet them, but Roy himself stayed seated.
โIโve been waiting for you for a long time,โ said Roy.
Jessica replied, โSorry, I went to visit my mother-in-law today, so Iโm a bit late.โ
Roy glanced at Jessica; even he knew Chrisโs mother had passed away, so visiting his mother-in-law meant paying respects at the grave. There was nothing much to say about honoring the dead.
โI still have people at my bureau waiting. You said today you wanted to investigate the incident when Chris was nearly killed years ago. Do you think itโs connected to your competitors?โ
Chris sat beside Jessica, a little shocked. Years ago, he had almost suffered carbon monoxide poisoning at home. After investigation, they found that his tea had been laced with sleeping pills. Chris never figured out when he had taken those pills, and Jessica hadnโt shown any intention to investigate back then, only growing colder toward him from that point. Now, after two or three years, she actually wanted to look into it.
โYes, I suspect itโs related to the Hall family. If possible, please merge the cases and investigate them together.โ
