The legal stipulations were clear. In the absence of a will, Danna's assets were to be divided equally between her spouse and daughter. Danna, who hadn't earned an income since her marriage, left only an old, neglected apartment—unlivable and long abandoned, yet holding a sentimental value for Elizabeth.

Oliver accused her of monopolizing the property and demanded compensation for his perceived loss, plus damages for its vacancy. He threatened to sell it unless she paid.
