Episode 131
Elizabeth dragged herself home, overwhelmed by gloom, yearning only for the solitude of her apartment and the release of tears. To her surprise, she encountered Ruby leaving her apartment building in search of a late-night snack.
“Elizabeth…” Ruby’s voice faltered as she saw the distress etched on Elizabeth’s face. Quickly closing the distance, she asked, “What’s troubling you? Has something happened?”
“It’s nothing,” Elizabeth muttered, her voice barely audible, brushing past Ruby.
Ruby lingered, concern furrowing her brow. After a moment, she ventured cautiously, “Elizabeth, are you still upset about that evening at ‘Serene Sighs’? When I encouraged you to have a drink?”
Since Elizabeth's return to rebuild her career, she had been distant, and Ruby wondered if that night had strained their friendship. It was time for a reconciliation. Approaching gently, Ruby offered an explanation, hoping to bridge the gap. “I thought a drink might help us avoid any unwanted attention.”
Elizabeth stopped abruptly, surprise and understanding dawning on her face. “I don’t blame you at all for that night. I know you were looking out for me. Your support has been invaluable since I’ve returned. I really appreciate it.”
Elizabeth had become accustomed to processing her emotions alone, so much so that even her closest friend remained unaware of her inner turmoil. As she unlocked her apartment door, she hesitated, turning back to Ruby.
“Would you mind coming in for a while?” she asked, a hint of hope in her voice.
Their gazes met, and a shared smile bridged the distance, silently healing a rift. Ruby stepped inside, her voice firm yet comforting.
“Whatever comes our way, let’s not shy away from discussing it. We’ll tackle it together, so no more bottling things up, okay?”
