โI almost forgot to mention, the organizers are investigating the accident and should have results by tomorrow. Donโt worry about medical expensesโtheyโll cover everything. Compensation will follow legal standards, too. As for a caregiver, Iโll request one from the organizers tonight.โ
Alaricka Huston chuckled softly: โAlright, thank you, Ms. Wyatt. Please attend to your duties. Iโll be fine here.โ
โOkay, Iโll take my leave then.โ
After Paloma Wyatt left, Alaricka remained alone in the hospital room.
She shifted cautiously, reaching for the lunch box. Taking small bites of rice, she ate slowly.
Recent events had stolen her appetite. She only managed to eat a layer of the meal before sipping some Golden Milk.
Just as she set down her fork, the door swung open. A familiar voice rang out:
โEating so littleโare you dieting?โ
It was Kieran Argent.
Alaricka set down her fork, her voice icy. โYou sent the housekeeper without asking me. This has nothing to do with me.โ
Kieran stepped closer, his dark eyes sweeping over her cast-encased ankle propped on pillows. โNot satisfied? Weโll find another,โ he stated flatly. โWeโll keep replacing them until you are.โ
โI told you,โ Alaricka insisted, โI donโt need one.โ
Kieran brushed off her words entirely. โA new housekeeper arrives tomorrow.โ
Alaricka frowned. โKieran, do you even realize what youโre doing?โ
He picked up the medical chart from her bedside table, flipping through its pages. โWhat did the doctor say?โ
Her gaze remained detached. โThe doctor said Iโd recover faster if certain annoying presences stopped appearing before me.โ
Kieran seemed to huff a near-silent laugh before returning the chart to the table.
A knock sounded at the hospital room door.
Kieran answered with the ease of someone in charge. โEnter.โ
โMr. Argent.โ
His assistant entered, struggling under the weight of an overstuffed backpack Alaricka recognized instantly. Books bulged against its seams.
โMr. Argent, Ms. Hustonโs study materials are here. And her mother has arrived as well.โ
Kieran gave a brief nod.
The assistant placed the heavy backpack near Alarickaโs feet and exited.
Alaricka stared at the doorway. โMy momโs here?โ
Footsteps echoed almost immediately, and Tamika Coldberg hurried into the room.
Alaricka called out, โMom? Why did you come?โ
Tamikaโs eyes locked onto Alarickaโs elevated leg, her face twisting with distress. She rushed to the bedside, her voice tight with worry. โIf Mr. Argentโs assistant hadnโt come for your things, I wouldnโt even know you broke your leg! Youโre grown now, huh? Planning to keep something like this from your own mother?โ
โHow could you break your leg just going to a competition?โ she continued, the questions tumbling out. โHow serious is it? Does it hurt? What did the doctor say?โ
Alaricka took her motherโs hand, guiding her to sit. โMom, itโs nothing. I just hadnโt had a chance to tell you yet. Itโs not serious. The doctor says itโll heal fine with rest.โ
Tamika shot her a reproachful look. โThe National College Entrance Examination is in three months! Canโt you give me peace of mind? Tell me honestly, how did this happen?โ
Alaricka glanced at Kieran, then carefully picked and chose what to tell her mother.
โThe metal frame on stage collapsed suddenly. I didnโt see it coming and got hit.โ
Tamika gasped, her expression scornful. โWasnโt this supposed to be a major competition? How does a metal frame just fall? Shoddy workmanship! What about the organizers? Medical bills? Compensation?โ
Alaricka reassured her. โDonโt worry. The organizers have already spoken to me. Theyโll take responsibility. Everything owed will be handled.โ
