Chapter 281

She gripped the wheelchair rims, pushing forward with effort. Before she could muster full strength, her hands were brushed aside.

Kieranโ€™s lazy, cold voice came from behind: โ€œMaking a scene?โ€

Without waiting for refusal, he started pushing her.

Alarieka rested her hands on her thighs, slowly clutching the fabric. Her ankle was still injured. No point fighting Kieranโ€”better let him be free labor and save her energy.

But then Kieranโ€™s fir scent, mixed with Roseโ€™s sweet perfume, drifted to her nose.

Alarieka thought blankly: she hated that smell. She shut her eyes, pretending not to notice.

Dean Li stood frozen in despair, watching them leave, his face darkening.

The woman looked scared and wronged. She knew sheโ€™d messed up but couldnโ€™t grasp why theyโ€™d grovel to that man or accept such absurd demands.

Clutching her sonโ€™s hand, she trembled: โ€œUncle, who is he?โ€

Staring at Dean Liโ€™s back, she grew more confused: โ€œUncle, we donโ€™t need to bow down. How could I possibly do that? Youโ€™re the hospital deanโ€”using your body to mop floors is humiliating. No need to agree. We shouldnโ€™t fear him. At worst, weโ€™ll make this public and see whoโ€™s truly shamed.โ€

The director stood with his back to her, silent. The woman spoke more and more righteously, even her brows and eyes showing a hint of anger and indignation, as if she had truly suffered a great injustice.

โ€œBesides, even if that Mr. Argent has heaven-defying abilities, what his sister did scalding my son was still wrong! She should pay compensation. My son is uncleโ€™s nephew, and Iโ€™m my sonโ€™s mother. We should stand by my son.โ€

The director spoke, lowering his voice: โ€œIโ€™m asking you, what really happened here? Is what Mr. Argentโ€™s sister said true? Did your son run over and bump into someone, knocking over the thermos?โ€

The little boy, terrified, shrank behind his mother: โ€œMommyโ€ฆโ€

The womanโ€™s expression turned awkward, her eyes darting around: โ€œItโ€™sโ€ฆitโ€™s just like I said, that Mr. Argentโ€™s sister splashed hot water on my sonโ€ฆโ€

The directorโ€™s face darkened, his voice rising sharply: โ€œThe truth!โ€

The woman stammered: โ€œIโ€ฆIโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThatโ€™s Kieran Argent!โ€

โ€œSpeak!โ€

Director Li stepped closer, locking eyes with her. โ€œTell me the truth. What really happened?โ€

The woman flinched, face turning pale. โ€œIt was Hanghangโ€ฆ He accidentally bumped into Mr. Argentโ€™s sister. Thatโ€™s why the thermos fell.โ€

She clutched Director Liโ€™s arm anxiously. โ€œUncle, Hanghang lost his father when he was little. Youโ€™ve watched him grow up. You even bought his formula. You know heโ€™d never do it on purpose. Heโ€™s just a child! He doesnโ€™t understand anything. Please donโ€™t blame him?โ€

Her voice faded as she saw Director Liโ€™s expression darken terrifyinglyโ€”a look heโ€™d never given her before. Her chest tightened, skin growing paler.

โ€œUncle, who is that man? Why are you so afraid of him?โ€

Smack!

Director Li slapped her hard across the face, putting his full strength behind it.

The woman covered her stinging cheek, eyes brimming with hurt. โ€œUncle, why did you hit me again?โ€

He jabbed a trembling finger at her, jaw clenched and face flushed crimson. โ€œYou foolish woman! Youโ€™re going to get me killed!โ€

Tears streamed down the womanโ€™s face. The little boy, seeing his mother struck, hid behind her legs, refusing to come out.

Director Li spotted the child and yanked him forward by the collar. โ€œWhy did you push her?!โ€

โ€œSpeak! Why did you push her?!โ€

The boy stared wide-eyed, hands feebly gripping Director Liโ€™s wrist. His lips trembled before he burst into loud, panicked sobs. โ€œMommy! Mommy!โ€

The woman lunged to pull her son free. โ€œUncle, heโ€™s just a child! Only a child! Donโ€™t hurt him!โ€
