Listen to this chapter:

Victor tugged her sleeve. โ€œProblem? Donโ€™t agree?โ€

โ€œFine, fine. Whatever. Let go,โ€ she said flatly, swatting his hand and shifting further.

Victorโ€™s smile lingered but faded as his eyes swept the gawking passengers. Their gazes immediately dropped.

Outside the exam hall, crowds swarmed.

At the entrance, Alarieka turned. โ€œIโ€™m heading in. You can go.โ€

โ€œSure.โ€

Victor suddenly reached out, ruffling her neatly styled hair with his palm.

Just before Alarieka could react, Victor withdrew his hand, chuckling, โ€œDonโ€™t be mad. Iโ€™m transferring top studentโ€™s luck to youโ€“itโ€™ll boost your scores. Anyone I pat on the head aces exams.โ€

Instantly, nearby students and parents swiveled their heads, eyes widening with undisguised awe.

Alariekaโ€™s brow twitched. She nearly snapped back, but today was the National College Entrance Examinationโ€“stay graceful, not irritable.

So she muttered: โ€œGet lost.โ€

As she turned toward the entrance, Victor caught her arm.

โ€œAlaricka, Iโ€™ve got commitments these two days. Canโ€™t wait for you after exams, nor escort you tomorrow.โ€

She shot him a puzzled look: โ€œGo do your thing.โ€

Sheโ€™d never asked him to anyway.

Victor seemed to read her thoughts, amusement crinkling his eyes: โ€œAlaricka, ace it without me. Bring home that National Exam Top Scorer title.โ€

More heads turned, scanning for whoever dared claim victory before the first test.

For once, Alarieka didnโ€™t hide her smile.

โ€œJust wait. Iโ€™ll reclaim it.โ€

With the exam being a national event, reporters swarmed outside venues. The striking pair drew immediate attentionโ€“cameras pivoted while journalists interviewed others.

After their bold declaration, reporters sprinted over, thrusting microphones forward.

โ€œHello! Capital TV here. Mind a few questions? Are you both candidates? We overheard your National Exam Top Scorer goals! Seems youโ€™re confidentโ€“care to share?โ€

Microphones and lenses zoomed in.

Alaricka and Victor exchanged glances, speaking simultaneously:

โ€œNonsense.โ€

โ€œNational Exam Top Scorer.โ€

The first was Alarickaโ€™s, the second Victorโ€™s.

Victor clearly knew nothing of humilityโ€“daring to say something so bold on camera. Had they seriously claimed the top spot, theyโ€™d dominate trending topics before finishing the first test.

As the reporter beamed, Alaricka cut in deadpan:

โ€œHe said that, not me. Ask him about being top scorer.โ€

Lenses and mics swung to Victor.

He stiffened, then stated solemnly: โ€œNonsense. We were joking.โ€

The reporterโ€™s smile froze: โ€œOh? Wellโ€ฆ any words of encouragement then?โ€

Shi Yao turned his strikingly handsome face toward the camera. โ€œThe title of National Exam Top Scorer belongs to every student taking the National College Entrance Examination. Though Iโ€™m not a candidate, I wish you all outstanding results.โ€

The reporter couldnโ€™t withstand Shi Yaoโ€™s dazzling looks, blushing as she hurried away.

Alarieka Huston frowned at Shi Yao. โ€œIs this wise?โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

Alaricka glanced toward the crowd, nodding at the reporterโ€™s camera. โ€œArenโ€™t people searching for you? Shouldnโ€™t you avoid these lenses?โ€

Shi Yao chuckled dismissively. โ€œRelax. Theyโ€ฆ I mean, they already know Iโ€™m here. Iโ€™ll slip away before they catch me. Focus on your exam.โ€

As Alarieka turned to leave, Shi Yao spoke slowly. โ€œActuallyโ€ฆ are you okay?โ€

Alarieka paused slightly, spinning around with calm, clear eyes. โ€œWhat?โ€

Shi Yao remained silent, watching her intently.

Alarieka Huston knew Shi Yao was referring to everything that happened months ago at the Mcintosh Piano Competition. She wasnโ€™t surprised he knewโ€“sheโ€™d never tried hiding it from anyone around her. Some things just couldnโ€™t be kept secret.

The incident had blown up spectacularly due to certain factors. Though few might know the full story, even her neighbors would mutter about her face and name.

There was no way Shi Yao wouldnโ€™t know.

She had no intention of running from her painful past.
