Chapter 414

Shi Yao pondered Jayleneโ€™s reaction, attempting to fish for more: โ€œArenโ€™t you worried about Alaricka?โ€

Jayleneโ€™s face stayed calm: โ€œWorrying wonโ€™t help. Sheโ€™ll have to face this sooner or later.โ€

Shi Yao frowned: โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

Suddenly, Jaylene looked at him and laughedโ€”a meaningful laugh. โ€œYoung man, could you be any more obvious about your intentions?โ€

Over the years, Alaricka had grown taller.

Shi Yao froze for a moment. โ€œWhat?โ€

Jaylene snorted, shooting Nie Guanyu a meaningful look. โ€œYouโ€™re being way too obvious. Even I can tellโ€”are you chasing after Alaricka?โ€

Shi Yao furrowed his brows, ears slowly reddening. He lowered his voice. โ€œYou all noticed?โ€

Jaylene kept signaling Nie Guanyu. โ€œYouโ€™re practically shouting it. Anyone who misses it must be blind.โ€

After a brief silence, Shi Yao mumbled, โ€œEveryone else noticed. Only she didnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œWho didnโ€™t notice?โ€ Jaylene frowned, impatience sharp in her toneโ€”directed not at Shi Yao, but at Nie Guanyu. The guy was hopeless. Sheโ€™d flashed him countless hints, yet he just blinked back cluelessly, face blank with innocence.

โ€œNever mind,โ€ Shi Yao turned, gaze fixed where Alaricka had disappeared.

Jaylene gritted her teeth, shooting Nie Guanyu a glare sharp enough to cut stone.

Nie Guanyu scratched his head, stammering, โ€œDโ€“Do your eyes hurt?โ€

Jaylene nearly groaned. Whirling back, she seized Shi Yaoโ€™s arms. As he stiffened in surprise, she snapped at Nie Guanyu, โ€œStill donโ€™t get it? Didnโ€™t you hear what Alaricka just said? Grab him now! Donโ€™t let him follow her!โ€

Utterly exasperated, sheโ€™d been signaling Nie Guanyu to catch Shi Yao off guardโ€”pin him down before he could bolt. Sheโ€™d assumed their years of friendship meant heโ€™d read her cues. Instead, heโ€™d been denser than a brick wall.

Nie Guanyu blinked. โ€œHuh?โ€

Shi Yao protested, โ€œI wasnโ€™tโ€”โ€

Nie Guanyu snapped to attention, striding forward. โ€œRโ€“Right! On it!โ€

Shi Yaoโ€™s eyes darkened, muscles tensing.

Though simple-minded, Nie Guanyu was strong. He clamped down instantly, wrenching Shi Yaoโ€™s arms behind his back with firm efficiency. โ€œStay still,โ€ he warned, though his voice lacked convictionโ€”flattened by years under Shi Yaoโ€™s aura of academic excellence. It sounded robotic.

Shi Yao:

Satisfied with Nie Guanyuโ€™s restraint, Jaylene released her grip. โ€œProfessor Shi, better stay put. If Alaricka doesnโ€™t want you following, donโ€™t. Sheโ€™ll get angry, and youโ€™ll end up begging on your knees again.โ€

Shi Yao sighed. โ€œI never said Iโ€™d go.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t pretend,โ€ Jaylene retorted, unmoved.

Too weary to keep up the act, Shi Yao admitted, โ€œHonestly, I wonโ€™t. You already guessedโ€”I upset her days ago and still havenโ€™t made it up to her. Why would I push it now?โ€

Jaylene smiled sweetly. โ€œNie Guanyu, keep holding him.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ Nie Guanyu nodded.

Head bowed, Shi Yao gave a wry smile. โ€œI mean it. No tricks. I wasnโ€™t planning to follow. Justโ€ฆ asking.โ€

No one answered. Nie Guanyu looked at the ground, then at the sky, before cautiously eyeing Jayleneโ€™s expressionโ€”like an honest kid cornered into desperate action.

Shi Yao closed his eyes helplessly. โ€œHow about letting me go first? Many of your employees are around. If they see this, they might already be discussing it on Social Media Group. Thatโ€™s terrible for morale.โ€

Jaylene lifted her chin. โ€œTake him inside. Lock him in the conference room. We donโ€™t need your help now anyway. Stay put until Alaricka returns.โ€

Surprisingly cooperative, Shi Yao agreed, โ€œFine. Lock me up as long as Alaricka wants.โ€

Jaylene snorted. โ€œYou think Iโ€™d believe that? Nie Guanyu, take him away.โ€

Nie Guanyu stole a glance at Shi Yaoโ€™s face and nodded subtly.

Back when Kieran demanded Alaricka personally negotiate the game rights, Secretary Liu had already relayed the message. Yet the exact timing remained unsettled until this morning, when Kieranโ€™s assistant finally sent details.
