Listen to this chapter:

Kieran straightened, his dark eyes sharpening under the bright lights.

โ€œBoyfriend?โ€ he demanded.

Alarieka tilted her head. โ€œWhy? Interested in him?โ€

His gaze pinned her. โ€œI recall stating that our partnership requires transparency in all mattersโ€”including romantic entanglements.โ€

She cut him off. โ€œMessage received. Rest assured, my personal life wonโ€™t interfere.โ€

His voice turned icy. โ€œProve it.โ€

โ€œWords alone mean nothing.โ€

Her eyes narrowed. He was deliberately provoking her. Since when did business partners police each otherโ€™s relationships?

โ€œIโ€”โ€ she began.

โ€œMr. Argent neednโ€™t worry.โ€

An arm suddenly circled her shoulders, pulling her against a warm chest. Startled, she looked up to see Shi Yao smiling down at her. Understanding flashed across her face. She stayed silent, allowing his closeness. Head bowed, she listened as Shi Yao spoke.

โ€œPerhaps youโ€™re unaware, Mr. Argent, but Alarieka and I have been together five years. Our relationshipโ€™s solid.โ€ He chuckled warmly. โ€œSheโ€™s my first love. Iโ€™d never risk what we haveโ€”would you?โ€ His earnest delivery couldโ€™ve moved mountains.

Alariekaโ€™s breath hitched.

Kieran remained silent for a long moment. She finally lifted her gaze to study him. His expression stayed impassive, lips pressed into a stern line.

โ€œWell?โ€ Alarieka prompted. โ€œAny other concerns?โ€

โ€œIf thereโ€™s no issue, weโ€™ll head out first. Iโ€™ve got some business to handle later.โ€ Kieran glanced at her, then at Shi Yao, gave a hum of acknowledgment, and turned away, his back facing them.

Alarieka looked up at Shi Yao. โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€

The moment her voice faded, Roseโ€™s chime cut through: โ€œKieran.โ€ Alarieka arched an eyebrow, catching sight of Roseโ€™s blissful, gentle smile as she glided toward Kieran, looping her arm through his with slow, tender grace. Kieran lowered his gaze to her, the taut line of his mouth softening into a faint curve.

After Alarieka turned away, Kieran pivoted too, his obsidian eyes drilling into the intimate, retreating figures of the man and woman. He narrowed his gaze, replaying the scene heโ€™d witnessed earlier while stepping out of the VIP Lounge for air. A fluke of positioning had given him a crystal-clear view of Alarieka and Shi Yaoโ€™s table. Their main-floor seating left nothing hidden. Alariekaโ€™s face had been alight, all wild energy as she practically launched herself into Shi Yaoโ€™s arms. Shi Yao looked down at her, laughter and adoration flooding his eyes, weathering her playful assault with patient warmth, his arms encircling her protectively. Their closeness was undeniable. Kieran stood there, cigarette in hand, absorbing every flicker of their interaction.

Her boyfriend?

A sardonic twist touched Kieranโ€™s lips now.

Rose murmured, โ€œKieran, whatโ€™s wrong?โ€

In a blink, his expression smoothed. โ€œNothing. Letโ€™s go.โ€

Walking back, Shi Yao kept an arm slung around her shoulders, coaxing, โ€œSo? Nailed it, didnโ€™t I?โ€

Alariekaโ€™s tone was flat. โ€œPassable. Barely human.โ€

Shi Yao tsked. โ€œWould a compliment kill you? Without me playing boyfriend back there, youโ€™d be stuck watching Kieran and Rose flaunt their love story. Then youโ€™d just be the jealous one left sulking.โ€

Alarieka patted his arm. โ€œFine, fine, youโ€™re brilliant. Now let go.โ€

Shi Yao dropped his arm, sulky. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong with a hug? Getting shy?โ€

Alarieka rolled her eyes.

After parting ways with Alarieka, Shi Yao, and Paloma, they headed to a mall and stepped into a gold boutique.

Shi Yao lifted a brow. โ€œWhat, selling bracelets now?โ€

Alarieka scanned the display cases while walking, voice steady. โ€œTonightโ€™s Kieran and Roseโ€™s fifth anniversary. Just remembered I never got a gift. Scouting options now so I donโ€™t show up empty-handed.โ€

Shi Yao nodded, studying Alariekaโ€™s profile intently.

โ€œAlarieka.โ€

Distracted by a bracelet the clerk held out, Alarieka murmured, โ€œGo on.โ€
