Chapter 464

That ambulance carrying him was the source of her lifelong pain.

She should walk away. Pretend she saw nothing.

What right did she have to save him? He had parents. A grandfather. The whole Argent family. Let them save him.

Where were Kieran and Rose now anyway?

She wouldnโ€™t lift a finger.

โ€œItโ€™s breaking! Itโ€™s really breaking!โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t wanna die! Mom, Dad, Iโ€™m sorry! I wonโ€™t mess around anymore-โ€

Alariekaโ€™s head throbbed as if struck by a hammer, pain jolting through her body.

She squeezed her eyes shut.

The next moment, Alarieka whirled around, pulled a rope from beneath the potted plant, and decisively threw it toward the adults gathered directly above Qiyuan Argent.

โ€œTake this!โ€ Alarieka shouted.

โ€œA rope! Itโ€™s a rope!โ€

Their eyes lit up as they grabbed the rope. Instantly forgetting the woman whoโ€™d thrown it, they swiftly tied a firm knot and lowered it down.

โ€œKid, grab the rope! Weโ€™ll pull you up!โ€

After tossing the rope, Alarieka turned and walked away.

This was all she could do.

She wouldnโ€™t involve herself further.

Her face cold, Alaricka silently returned to sit beneath the tree.

Shi Yao followed.

Having witnessed everything, Shi Yao finally understood Alarickaโ€™s earlier hesitation when he saw her retrieve the rope.

Sheโ€™d been debating whether to save Qiyuan Argent.

Others would condemn her reluctance, attacking from their moral high ground.

Shi Yao wouldnโ€™t.

Though questions lingered, this was Alariekaโ€™s burden.

Last night, heโ€™d seen the Argent familyโ€™s malice toward her firsthand. Alarieka had lived among them for years.

No one could truly understand what sheโ€™d endured in that house.

No one knew the depth of her anguish.

Shi Yao knew how deeply compassionate Alarieka was.

And he recognized only profound pain could make her hesitate so long.

Donโ€™t preach kindness to those whose suffering youโ€™ve never borne.

That sheโ€™d chosen to save Qiyuan despite her conflict spoke volumes of her heart.

Shi Yao sat quietly beside Alarieka, not making a sound.

The little girl lacked such tact, bounding over to ask, โ€œYou seem upset. Whatโ€™s wrong?โ€

Alarieka forced a faint smile. โ€œItโ€™s nothing. Donโ€™t worry.โ€

The girl stared intently into her eyes. โ€œYouโ€™re lying. You look so sad. Why?โ€

โ€œMaybe because I havenโ€™t seen the pandas yet.โ€

โ€œHa! I knew you loved pandas too!โ€

Digging through her backpack, the girl produced a panda charm. โ€œSince we both love pandas, you can have this! Donโ€™t be sadโ€“weโ€™ll see them soon!โ€

Alaricka paused briefly before accepting the charm. โ€œThank you.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re welcome!โ€

Clutching the panda, Alarickaโ€™s composure wavered.

โ€œOnceโ€ฆ I had a sister your age."

The girl beamed. โ€œReally? Why didnโ€™t you bring her today?โ€

Alaricka licked her dry lips, her voice barely audible. โ€œShe-โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s up! They got him!โ€

Cheers erupted from the crowd. โ€œThe boyโ€™s safe!โ€

Alariekaโ€™s words died in her throat.

Distracted by the commotion, the girl asked her bodyguard, โ€œWhat happened?โ€

After a quick glance, the guard reported, โ€œThey rescued the little boy. Heโ€™s fine.โ€

Alarieka lowered her eyelids.

The little girl threw her arms up in delight: โ€œGreat! Then we can keep watching the pandas!โ€

Before Alarieka could finish speaking, the girl tugged her toward the viewing platform: โ€œLetโ€™s hurry!โ€

Alarieka stumbled forward, pulled along as they squeezed through the crowd to the front row.

The girl watched the pandas with rapt, silent attention.

Alariekaโ€™s mind wandered blankly, unsure where to focus.

Her gaze settled on the pandas, drifting into thought.

โ€œAlarieka.โ€

Victor suddenly called her name.

She blinked back to awareness: โ€œYes?โ€

Victor turned, his face uncharacteristically serious, voice low and soft.

โ€œWhat were you going to say earlier?โ€

Alaricka hesitated: โ€œHmm?โ€

He leaned closer: โ€œAbout your sister. What happened?โ€

Her eyes momentarily lost focus: โ€œYou heard?โ€

Victor murmured: โ€œMm.โ€

A bitter taste rose in Alarickaโ€™s throat: โ€œโ€ฆShe passed away.โ€

Victorโ€™s lips parted, brows knitting as his voice roughened: โ€œโ€ฆIโ€™m sorry.โ€

Alarieka forced a thin smile: โ€œNot your fault. I chose to say it.โ€

Silence hung between them afterward.

As the internetโ€“famous panda drew crowds, the zoo limited viewing to five minutes per group. Soon, they left the platform.

They rested at a pavilion nearby.

The girl eagerly scrolled through bodyguardโ€“taken photos: โ€œI want to see them again! So cute!โ€

Victor twisted open a water bottle, handing it to Alarieka: โ€œDrink. Your lips look dry.โ€

She took a small sip.

โ€œDaddy!โ€

The girl sprinted toward a foreign man, launching herself into his arms.

Rio.

Alarieka set down the bottle and stood.

Rioโ€™s eyes crinkled as he lifted his daughter. She peppered his cheeks with loud โ€œmwah mwahโ€ kisses.

His laughter boomed while carrying her toward Alarieka.

โ€œMr. Rio, good afternoon.โ€ Alaricka greeted softly.

Rio glanced at her, setting his daughter down.

Before he could speak, the girl dragged him forward: โ€œDaddy, meet my new friend!โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s calledโ€ฆ calledโ€ฆโ€ The girl pouted, โ€œI donโ€™t know! She didnโ€™t tell me.โ€

Rio ruffled her hair: โ€œI know. This is Ms. Huston. You may call her Ms. Huston.โ€

The girl immediately chirped: โ€œMs. Huston!โ€

Rio beamed: โ€œClever girl.โ€

Alaricka quietly observed their interaction without interruption.

Two minutes later, Rio finally met her eyes: โ€œMs. Huston, my security briefed me beforehand and shared your photo. I hope you understandโ€“I guard my daughterโ€™s safety closely and vet everyone near her.โ€

Alaricka smiled. โ€œItโ€™s fine. I understand.โ€

Rio nodded and lifted his daughter again. โ€œI saw what you did earlier.โ€

Alarieka paused before realizing he meant her throwing the rope.

Alaricka asked, โ€œOh? You were there too?โ€

Rio nodded. โ€œYes. Since I recognized Mr. Argentโ€™s child, I stayed nearby to help. You probably didnโ€™t notice me.โ€

โ€œBut I saw you,โ€ Rio continued. โ€œThank goodness you found that rope. The boy wouldโ€™ve fallen otherwise.โ€

Alarieka replied, โ€œJust a small gesture. Nothing worth mentioning.โ€

Rio handed his daughter to a bodyguard, motioning for them to step away. He then gestured to Alarieka. โ€œPlease have a seat. Ms. Huston.โ€

Alarieka waited until Rio sat before taking her own seat.

Rio cleared his throat lightly, his smile fading slightly compared to when heโ€™d addressed his daughter. โ€œI know what youโ€™re after, Ms. Huston. But I still wonโ€™t sell you the game center copyright.โ€

Though disappointed, Alaricka maintained her composure. โ€œThatโ€™s alright. Iโ€™ll keep trying.โ€

Rio chuckled briefly. โ€œMs. Huston, I hadnโ€™t planned to mention this. But since you saved Mr. Argentโ€™s child, Iโ€™ll share something with you.โ€

Alaricka said, โ€œGo ahead.โ€

Rio leaned forward. โ€œAre you Mr. Argentโ€™s sister?โ€

Alaricka frowned. โ€œNot exactly. I just lived with the Argents for a few years. Moved out five years ago and havenโ€™t seen them since.โ€

Rio suddenly looked surprised. โ€œSo youโ€™re not close?โ€

โ€œNot particularly,โ€ Alarieka pressed her lips together. โ€œDid they tell you something?โ€

Rio hesitated a moment. โ€œThen Iโ€™ll be blunt.โ€
