Melody couldn’t let Debra talk Theda out of it. If the Nichols Group ended up in Debra’s hands, they were doomed.
Meanwhile, Debra and Theda arrived at a quiet café. Theda waved her hand and rented out the whole place. “I don’t like to discuss business with strangers around,” she said. “I hope you don’t mind.”
Before coming to meet Theda, Debra had learned that Theda was a rare genius. She had rejoined the Buchan family at 17 and started an extraordinary journey since then. Despite being raised by strangers and living in the countryside, she showed a talent for business that was beyond ordinary. She was famous in Wrastow City, and her shrewdness matched Juan’s.
Theda sat across from Debra, calmly sipping her coffee. “You came to stop me from taking over the Nichols Group, didn’t you?”
“Not really. I want to know if the medicine you gave Andrew works.”
Theda looked up in surprise. “You came to see me for Andrew? Aren’t you worried that Melody might hand over their company to me?”
Instead of answering her question, Debra said, “Andrew wouldn’t take the medicine. I don’t know why, but I’m willing to buy its patent if necessary.”
Theda leaned over and studied her expression. “Wanna know why Andrew refuses to take it?”
Debra didn’t answer, and she continued, “If he doesn’t appreciate my effort, I won’t insist. Let’s talk about business instead.”
Theda opened a file on her phone and said, “I know that Juan transferred all of his shares to you. Legally, you’re now the largest shareholder. But there’s one problem: even though Juan’s 45% stake is the biggest, it’s not enough to control the company. He was in charge before because he had the support of Melody, who has 10% of the shares. Combined, the shares ensured his control. Melody could join forces with other shareholders and vote you out. Then she could buy back your shares and render you irrelevant.”
Debra didn’t pick up the conversation. Instead, she asked, “Is Andrew refusing the medicine because he doesn’t want to side with you?”
Theda was taken aback. “Looks like we aren’t on the same page.” She had explained the situation in detail, but Debra was solely focused on Andrew.
“Thank you for your time, Ms. Buchan,” Debra said, standing up. “I’ve learned what I want to know.”
Theda quickly got up and called after her, “Wait.”
Debra stopped. “Something wrong with the medicine?”
