Chapter 11ยฝ
Debra sighed in relief. โThe doctor said you need to stay here for observation. During that time, Iโll take care of you.โ She paused and corrected herself, โI mean, we will take care of you.โ
โHuh?โ Marion was baffled.
Before Debra could explain, a knock came from the door. A group of caregivers shuffled in, looking like they wanted to be anywhere else. The air was thick with awkwardness before one of them finally broke the silence. โSir, weโre caregivers assigned to look after you during your recovery.โ
โOh, caregivers?โ Debra arched a brow. โFunny, though. You all look kind of familiar. Havenโt we met before?โ
โNo, maโam. Weโve never met. Weโre just ordinary workers here,โ they insisted.
Debra stood up and walked toward them, narrowing her eyes. โYou mean to tell me I donโt recognize the men who are always hovering around Drake?โ
The men panicked, their faรงade crumbling. โMaโam, weโre just following orders. If we mess this up, weโll be punished. Please, donโt blow our cover.โ
Debra had no intention of making things difficult for them. As long as Drake didnโt cause trouble, she didnโt mind having some helping hands.
โHave any of you even worked as caregivers before?โ she asked.
The men shook their heads.
โSo, what were you before? Just muscle for Drake?โ she asked again.
They all nodded sheepishly.
โAnd what did Drake tell you to do for Marion?โ
The group exchanged nervous glances before one of them stepped forward and replied, โWeโre told to make sure Mr. Houston doesnโt die.โ
โThatโs it?โ
They nodded nervously.
โWell, thatโs a pretty low bar,โ Erica scoffed.
She had hoped Drakeโs men might ease her workload and save her money, but it turned out they didnโt know the first thing about caregiving.
โCan you at least manage basic tasks? Like bringing tea and water?โ
โThat we can do,โ they replied confidently.
Erica nodded. โAlright. For the next few days, your only job is to serve water and tea.โ
โYes, maโam. Itโll be an honor to serve Mr. Houston,โ they said happily before leaving the room.
Debra walked back to the bed. โWeโve got free caregivers. Just tell them whatever you need. Drake owes us.โ
Marion protested, โBut I donโt want their care.โ
He thought the wedding date might be the wrong choice. It brought him bad luck and almost cost him his life.
Just then, the door opened. Erica and Randy walked in, carrying bags of food.
โWe brought dinner,โ Erica announced cheerfully.
Debra took the bags, laying out the food on a small table. The aroma filled the room, and Erica and Randy started eating right away.
Marion, however, didnโt move. Instead, he looked at Debra pitifully. โMy hand hurts.โ
