Chapter 144
Debra held up Michaelโs previous contract and tore it in half. Michael was stunned.
โHereโs the new contract,โ Debra said. โRead it carefully. If you donโt trust me, consult a lawyer. But if you believe in me, within a year, Iโll make you the hottest star.โ Her earnest expression swayed him. โWhy Siple Sear?โ he asked. Sean was now the top artist for Frazier Entertainment.
โAfter a while, Sean will be out of the picture,โ she said calmly. It just wasnโt the right time yet.
Michael fell silent for a moment before asking, โSo, what are your conditions?โ
โConditions?โ Debra looked puzzled.
Michael cut in coolly, โDo you want me to handle female clients for you?โ He didnโt finish his sentence, but his eyes hinted at something. When she realized what he meant, she blushed with embarrassment. โThatโs not what I meant! Iโm not asking you to handle clients for me, nor am I looking to keep youโฆโ
Michael pressed his lips together. โThen what?โ
โThere has to be a condition,โ Debra said. โYou have to promise me you wonโt jump ship. Youโll always be my artist.โ
โAnd conversely,โ Michael replied, โif I canโt make you famous within a year, Iโm free to leave without penalty.โ
Michael scrutinized her, trying to gauge the sincerity behind her words.
Just then, Donna called from the kitchen, โMichael, come help me cook.โ
He glanced at the kitchen and then back to Debra. โI agree.โ With that, he walked into the kitchen. Debra breathed a sigh of relief. She had dinner with them. After seeing Debra off, Michael stood by the window and dialed a number.
โMr. Austin, are you considering joining our company?โ said the polite voice on the other end.
Michael replied, โIโm sorry, Iโve decided not to.โ
โMr. Austin, please reconsider. Frazier Entertainment doesnโt intend to promote you, and weโre willing to pay your penalty.โ
โIโve made up my mind,โ Michael interrupted, hanging up the phone. His thoughts filled with Debraโs presence earlier that day. Though fleeting, it had caused his heart to skip a beat. โDebra,โ he murmured. Could her words be true?
Over the following two weeks, while recovering from an injury, Debra transferred all the companyโs resources to Michael. Within days, he landed three acting roles and four endorsement deals, skyrocketing in popularity. When Sean heard the news, he barged into Debraโs office. His fist slammed down on the desk, but his angry look didnโt unnerve Debra at all.
โMs. Frazier, this isnโt fair!โ he shouted.
