Chapter 171

โ€œWhere are you going?โ€ Juan grew anxious again. โ€œAre you returning to the Pottersโ€™?โ€

โ€œMy injuries have healed. Of course, Iโ€™m going to the apartment. Thereโ€™s an internship coming up at school, and I donโ€™t have time to shuttle between homes.โ€

As she turned to leave, Juan suddenly asked, โ€œWhatโ€™s your relationship with the McKinney Group?โ€

Debra turned back, somewhat incredulous. โ€œAre you grasping at straws? What relationship could I possibly have with it? I merely made a bad deal, selling them a piece of land. Do you think Iโ€™m the secret owner of that company?โ€

Chewing over her words, Juan took a step forward and asked, โ€œWere you staying at the Pottersโ€™ all along?โ€

Debra sighed, her patience wearing thin. โ€œYouโ€™ve asked this question before. Besides, your people should have informed you. I havenโ€™t left the Pottersโ€™ in the past few days.โ€

Juan fell into thought. He had intended to meet the mysterious Tracy at the masquerade, but he ended up figuring out nothing. He studied Debraโ€™s face, unable to glean any clues from her expression.

โ€œInstead of doubting me, you should focus on managing your company well. I heard the McKinney Group recently went public, dealing quite a blow to the Nichols Group. You probably donโ€™t have time for romantic entanglements with me now,โ€ Debra remarked casually.

โ€œItโ€™s just a newly listed company and nothing compared to the Nichols Group,โ€ Juan retorted.

Debra shrugged indifferently. โ€œPerhaps.โ€ If there wasnโ€™t a serious impact, Juan wouldnโ€™t have appeared at the masquerade. He was just too proud to admit it.

She turned to leave, but Juan called out to her, โ€œDebra!โ€ He quickly approached her and placed a small box in her hand.

Her words stunned Juan. He grasped her arm. โ€œWhy do you always think I have ulterior motives? Canโ€™t it be becauseโ€ฆโ€

Debra was stunned. Juan was the one who added, โ€œWhy are you trying to dissuade me? Reloje, you were afraid of me. Now, all you want toโ€ฆโ€

She used to follow him like a shadow, always eager to please. Since the auction, everything had changed. He couldnโ€™t figure out what he had done wrong, but he knew that the affection in her regard had disappeared.

โ€œWhat was I like before? Always following you, baking your favorite dishes every day? Trying hard to please you, even imitating other women?โ€

Juan was lost for words. Debra continued, โ€œDo you even have an inkling of what it was like for me?โ€

โ€œAdmit it. You never liked that version of me. Remember how much you despised me? Now you see you like me, but itโ€™s mere possessiveness at workโ€”when you realize you suddenly canโ€™t like me anymore.โ€

He wanted to argue, but her words left him defenseless. โ€œBack then, I gave you a sense of superiority, but that wasnโ€™t the real me. You loathed me, and I donโ€™t like you anymore; itโ€™s that simple.โ€

โ€œSo, even if I regret it and say I like you now, itโ€™s all pointless?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no use crying over spilled milk,โ€ she said firmly, shaking off his hand. โ€œThe old me wonโ€™t come back, and I will never fall for you again.โ€

The pain was evident in Juanโ€™s eyes. Not even a little. Debraโ€™s tone was piercingly resolute. โ€œAbsolutely not.โ€
