Chapter 232
โPlease spare me,โ Sheila pleaded, tears streaming down her face.
โDonโt play innocent, young lady. Just because youโve played dead and latched onto a wealthy man doesnโt mean all your problems disappear. Your benefactor has abandoned you, and now you need to find another sugar daddy to clear your motherโs eighty-million-dollar gambling debt. Do that, and maybe weโll let you off the hook.โ
โWhat? Eighty million? How could there be so much debt?โ
โYou tell me.โ
As they exchanged glances, realization dawned on Sheila. โYouโre loan sharks. This is illegal.โ
They burst into laughter. โIllegal? Do you think you can lecture us? Itโs only right to pay back whatโs owed. Your mother signed the IOU herself.โ
โI have nothing to do with her anymore. Why should I pay?โ
One of the men brandished her birth certificate. โA daughter inherits her motherโs debts. Do you think changing your identity will erase that? Your familyโs history is all here. You wonโt escape us until every cent is repaid.โ
Just then, Leanna returned and asked, with feigned ignorance, โWhatโs going on? Why is everyone standing?โ
Sheila quickly composed herself and sat down, but her appetite had vanished.
โLeanna, I donโt feel well. I want to go home.โ
โIs it serious? Should I drive you?โ
โNo, itโs fine,โ Sheila said, fleeing the room.
Leanna watched with cold eyes.
One of the men placed his hand on Leannaโs leg. โLeanna, shall we discuss business?โ
She smiled and stood up. โPlease excuse me, Iโve paid for todayโs bill. Enjoy your meal.โ
With that, she left the room, leaving the group bewildered.
Debra had received the surveillance footage. She recognized those men as dangerous figures in the underworld. This video could uncover some of Sheilaโs secrets. She listened carefully to their conversation.
โPlaying dead? What does that mean?โ she pondered aloud.
Just then, her phone rang. Answering it, she heard the voice of a police officer.
โMs. Frazier? SCPD.โ
โItโs me.โ
โWeโve identified the anonymous online poster, butโฆโ
โAnything wrong?โ
โSheโs been deceased for five years.โ
โFive years ago? Dead?โ
Debra was taken aback. Her mind raced back to the words spoken by the businessmen in the video: โYour mother owes us five years of gambling debts. Just because youโve played dead and latched onto a wealthy man doesnโt mean all your problems disappear.โ
The pieces began to fall into place. Soon, Debra had her answer to Sheilaโs secret.
Just then, her office door creaked open. Joe entered and said, โMadam, Mr. Nichols wants me to escort you home.โ
