Chapter 232

โ€œPlease spare me,โ€ Sheila pleaded, tears streaming down her face.

โ€œDonโ€™t play innocent, young lady. Just because youโ€™ve played dead and latched onto a wealthy man doesnโ€™t mean all your problems disappear. Your benefactor has abandoned you, and now you need to find another sugar daddy to clear your motherโ€™s eighty-million-dollar gambling debt. Do that, and maybe weโ€™ll let you off the hook.โ€

โ€œWhat? Eighty million? How could there be so much debt?โ€

โ€œYou tell me.โ€

As they exchanged glances, realization dawned on Sheila. โ€œYouโ€™re loan sharks. This is illegal.โ€

They burst into laughter. โ€œIllegal? Do you think you can lecture us? Itโ€™s only right to pay back whatโ€™s owed. Your mother signed the IOU herself.โ€

โ€œI have nothing to do with her anymore. Why should I pay?โ€

One of the men brandished her birth certificate. โ€œA daughter inherits her motherโ€™s debts. Do you think changing your identity will erase that? Your familyโ€™s history is all here. You wonโ€™t escape us until every cent is repaid.โ€

Just then, Leanna returned and asked, with feigned ignorance, โ€œWhatโ€™s going on? Why is everyone standing?โ€

Sheila quickly composed herself and sat down, but her appetite had vanished.

โ€œLeanna, I donโ€™t feel well. I want to go home.โ€

โ€œIs it serious? Should I drive you?โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s fine,โ€ Sheila said, fleeing the room.

Leanna watched with cold eyes.

One of the men placed his hand on Leannaโ€™s leg. โ€œLeanna, shall we discuss business?โ€

She smiled and stood up. โ€œPlease excuse me, Iโ€™ve paid for todayโ€™s bill. Enjoy your meal.โ€

With that, she left the room, leaving the group bewildered.

Debra had received the surveillance footage. She recognized those men as dangerous figures in the underworld. This video could uncover some of Sheilaโ€™s secrets. She listened carefully to their conversation.

โ€œPlaying dead? What does that mean?โ€ she pondered aloud.

Just then, her phone rang. Answering it, she heard the voice of a police officer.

โ€œMs. Frazier? SCPD.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s me.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ve identified the anonymous online poster, butโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAnything wrong?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s been deceased for five years.โ€

โ€œFive years ago? Dead?โ€

Debra was taken aback. Her mind raced back to the words spoken by the businessmen in the video: โ€œYour mother owes us five years of gambling debts. Just because youโ€™ve played dead and latched onto a wealthy man doesnโ€™t mean all your problems disappear.โ€

The pieces began to fall into place. Soon, Debra had her answer to Sheilaโ€™s secret.

Just then, her office door creaked open. Joe entered and said, โ€œMadam, Mr. Nichols wants me to escort you home.โ€
