Chapter 294
Cathrynโs smile froze. She felt awkward about Marionโs slight. A trio of noblewomen huddled together, their eyes following the three as they whispered.
โIsnโt that Mrs. Nichols? Why is she holding hands with Mr. Houston?โ โI always suspected their relationship was unusual. I didnโt expect them to be together before sheโs even divorced.โ โIsnโt Cathryn supposed to be Mr. Houstonโs fiancรฉe? This is going to be interesting.โ
Their whispers were cut short as bodyguards approached.
โSorry, ladies, Mr. Houston has instructed us to ask you three to leave.โ โWhy should we leave?โ one protested.
Then she felt a cold glare. Looking over, she froze at the sight of Marion. She was quickly ushered out, her companions following.
Cathryn felt a pang of jealousy and humiliation. Walking up to Marion, her voice trembling, she said, โMarion, Mrs. Nichols is a married woman. What youโre doing will hurt your reputation.โ
Cathryn spoke in a familiar tone, while Debra withdrew her hand from Marionโs grasp. โMiss Bernard is right. Itโs not good for your reputation.โ
Marion reached for Debraโs hand again. โHolding hands with my future wife doesnโt seem bad to me.โ He looked around and continued, โIf anyone talks, I have ways to make them stop.โ
At his words, Cathrynโs eyes welled up. โMarion, what do you mean by that?โ
She looked at Debra and then back at Marion, her eyes filled with confusion and helplessness. โYou and Mrs. Nicholsโฆ You twoโฆโ
Feeling the situation spiraling, Randy and Erica rushed over. Randy placed a hand on Marionโs shoulder, his voice low. โMarion, Miss Bernard is weak. Donโt scare her like this.โ
Cathryn clung to Marionโs hand, her voice trembling. โMarion, you promised youโd take responsibility for me. How can you marry someone else? And Mrs. Nichols is married. What youโre doing is wrong.โ
Erica frowned, assuming a seniorโs attitude. โMarion, you need to explain this to Miss Bernard right now. Otherwise, I wonโt be able to defend you in front of Debra.โ
Marion looked at Cathryn. โI promised to take responsibility for you, but not to marry you.โ
Cathryn burst into tears, overwhelmed.
Erica was stunned. โMarion, did you really promise to take responsibility? You twoโฆโ
Debraโs brow furrowed, and Cathryn conveniently fainted, collapsing into Randyโs arms.
โAh, Miss Bernard!โ Randy exclaimed, supporting her.
Marion frowned, and Randy quickly signaled for security to take Cathryn away.
Debra glanced at Marion, her eyes filled with anger and disappointment. โPromised to take responsibility but not to marry her? Marion, is this how you say you have nothing to do with her?โ
She shook off his hand and left the party. Marion tried to follow, but Randy held him back. โMarion, take care of this first. If something happens to Cathryn, how will you explain it to her late father?โ
Marion pressed his lips together, his expression torn. Cathryn was taken away in an ambulance, the sirens wailing in the distance.
Erica simmered with anger. โMarion, you better tell me the truth. Whatโs going on with you and Cathryn?โ
Randy made a subtle gesture, his expression filled with doubt. โYeah, did you really promise to take responsibility? You twoโฆโ
