Chapter 294

Cathrynโ€™s smile froze. She felt awkward about Marionโ€™s slight. A trio of noblewomen huddled together, their eyes following the three as they whispered.

โ€œIsnโ€™t that Mrs. Nichols? Why is she holding hands with Mr. Houston?โ€ โ€œI always suspected their relationship was unusual. I didnโ€™t expect them to be together before sheโ€™s even divorced.โ€ โ€œIsnโ€™t Cathryn supposed to be Mr. Houstonโ€™s fiancรฉe? This is going to be interesting.โ€

Their whispers were cut short as bodyguards approached.

โ€œSorry, ladies, Mr. Houston has instructed us to ask you three to leave.โ€ โ€œWhy should we leave?โ€ one protested.

Then she felt a cold glare. Looking over, she froze at the sight of Marion. She was quickly ushered out, her companions following.

Cathryn felt a pang of jealousy and humiliation. Walking up to Marion, her voice trembling, she said, โ€œMarion, Mrs. Nichols is a married woman. What youโ€™re doing will hurt your reputation.โ€

Cathryn spoke in a familiar tone, while Debra withdrew her hand from Marionโ€™s grasp. โ€œMiss Bernard is right. Itโ€™s not good for your reputation.โ€

Marion reached for Debraโ€™s hand again. โ€œHolding hands with my future wife doesnโ€™t seem bad to me.โ€ He looked around and continued, โ€œIf anyone talks, I have ways to make them stop.โ€

At his words, Cathrynโ€™s eyes welled up. โ€œMarion, what do you mean by that?โ€

She looked at Debra and then back at Marion, her eyes filled with confusion and helplessness. โ€œYou and Mrs. Nicholsโ€ฆ You twoโ€ฆโ€

Feeling the situation spiraling, Randy and Erica rushed over. Randy placed a hand on Marionโ€™s shoulder, his voice low. โ€œMarion, Miss Bernard is weak. Donโ€™t scare her like this.โ€

Cathryn clung to Marionโ€™s hand, her voice trembling. โ€œMarion, you promised youโ€™d take responsibility for me. How can you marry someone else? And Mrs. Nichols is married. What youโ€™re doing is wrong.โ€

Erica frowned, assuming a seniorโ€™s attitude. โ€œMarion, you need to explain this to Miss Bernard right now. Otherwise, I wonโ€™t be able to defend you in front of Debra.โ€

Marion looked at Cathryn. โ€œI promised to take responsibility for you, but not to marry you.โ€

Cathryn burst into tears, overwhelmed.

Erica was stunned. โ€œMarion, did you really promise to take responsibility? You twoโ€ฆโ€

Debraโ€™s brow furrowed, and Cathryn conveniently fainted, collapsing into Randyโ€™s arms.

โ€œAh, Miss Bernard!โ€ Randy exclaimed, supporting her.

Marion frowned, and Randy quickly signaled for security to take Cathryn away.

Debra glanced at Marion, her eyes filled with anger and disappointment. โ€œPromised to take responsibility but not to marry her? Marion, is this how you say you have nothing to do with her?โ€

She shook off his hand and left the party. Marion tried to follow, but Randy held him back. โ€œMarion, take care of this first. If something happens to Cathryn, how will you explain it to her late father?โ€

Marion pressed his lips together, his expression torn. Cathryn was taken away in an ambulance, the sirens wailing in the distance.

Erica simmered with anger. โ€œMarion, you better tell me the truth. Whatโ€™s going on with you and Cathryn?โ€

Randy made a subtle gesture, his expression filled with doubt. โ€œYeah, did you really promise to take responsibility? You twoโ€ฆโ€
