Chapter 37
Jordan frowned, turning to see Juan holding an umbrella. Apart from his brother, few in Seamar City commanded such a presence. โJuan?โ Jordan snorted. โWhy should I listen to you?โ
โBecause Iโm her husband,โ Juan replied, his deep eyes carrying a dangerous glint. Jordan froze. Juan tossed the umbrella aside and took Debra from Jordanโs arms. Joe raised an umbrella and followed closely behind. Jordan remained dazed. He couldnโt believe Debra was Juanโs wife.
In the hospital room, Debra stirred awake to the same gloomy, rainy weather. She vaguely remembered being stopped by Jordan at the entrance of Building #2 but had no idea what happened afterward. Debra struggled to sit up and saw Juan sleeping on his hand.
โMs. Frazier, youโre awake,โ Joe entered the room carrying a briefcase. Juan opened his eyes and saw Debra awake. Debra looked at his tired face, asking, โYou brought me to this hospital?โ
Juan didnโt respond. Joe took out a laptop and handed it to him. โMr. Nichols went to the school this morning to find you. You fainted, and he gave up his meeting to stay with you,โ Joe explained.
โYour services are not needed. Go,โ Juan said. His tone was flat, but Debra sensed the underlying anger. She asked, โWhy did you go to my school?โ
โWhen a husband canโt reach his wife, he has to find her in person,โ Juan replied sternly. Only then did Debra remember hanging up on Juanโs call last night. She explained, โI wasnโt feeling well last night, soโฆโ
โSo you hung up on me just like that?โ Juan interrupted. Debra didnโt argue; it was inappropriate to hang up on him.
โGive me your address. Iโll have someone move your things back,โ Juan said.
Debra frowned. โJuan, we agreed not to interfere with each other.โ
โCan you take care of yourself living alone?โ Juan asked.
โI can.โ
โIs this how you take care of yourself?โ
Debra was speechless. โI just tend to catch colds during seasonal changes. I didnโt expect it to be so serious this time.โ
โThis is not a negotiation.โ
โJuanโฆโ
โDebra!โ He cut her off. โAre you trying to talk back now?โ
โAttending Arcane Academy was my decision. Weโre in a business marriage. Iโll be a dignified Mrs. Nichols in public, but you canโt interfere and jeopardize my interests.โ
โA business marriage?โ Juan narrowed his eyes. So, thatโs how she viewed their marriage.
โIsnโt it?โ Debra replied. They had been nothing more than a nominal couple.
Juan took a deep breath. โFine, I can let you live outside, but only when your studies keep you busy. Other times, Iโll have Joe pick you up and take you home. Itโs unseemly for Mrs. Nichols to live elsewhere. If you donโt want Grandma to find out, do as I say.โ
Debra wanted to argue, but he added, โPeriod!โ
