Debra pondered for a moment before replying, “Technically, we’re enemies.” Oscar fell silent, seemingly weighing her words. Debra continued, “I’ve been honest with you about my relationship with Edgar. It’s only fair you reciprocate.” She could see Edgar was targeting Oscar, like a predator stalking its prey. The murderous intent in Edgar’s eyes had been unmistakable.

“No comment.” He turned to leave, but Debra’s next words stopped him. “Is he your brother?”

Oscar whirled around, his hand shooting out to grasp Debra’s neck, not tightly, but firmly enough to convey a message. “How do you know that? Who are you?”

Debra remained composed. “Your reaction confirmed it.” Oscar was taken aback, his grip loosening. Debra vaguely remembered rumors about the Odom family from her previous life. While she'd had dealings with them, it was safer to assume their existence than to dismiss them. Given the resemblance between Oscar and Edgar, along with the similarity in their names, Debra had suspected as much, but this confirmed it. Oscar was clearly inexperienced and easily manipulated.

Oscar’s face darkened. “You tricked me.”

Debra shrugged dismissively. “With your naiveté, you don’t stand a chance against Edgar. My advice? Terminate your contract with Potter Entertainment and leave while you can. If you don’t, your career will be over. Even if the investment in this program isn’t a loss, Edgar’s personal visit is unnecessary. He’s here to confirm your existence, knowing the investment will make him a shareholder, giving him the right to torment and ruin you. Don't you understand?”

Oscar pressed his lips together. He understood, but felt powerless. He could only remain.

Debra’s eyes narrowed as she studied him. She suddenly remembered the breach of contract mentioned by Ashley and others, and it clicked. “You can’t afford the breach of contract penalties, can you?”

Oscar’s ears turned red, confirming her suspicion. Debra laughed drily, surprised by his poverty.

Oscar’s voice was barely audible. “I’m an illegitimate child. I don’t have money.” He had joined the program on merit, hoping to make a name for himself. This was his only chance.

“Then what’s your plan? Are you going to fight Edgar?”

“No.”

“Then you’re just going to roll over and admit defeat?”

“I just want to stay out of his way.”

“Fat chance. Edgar sees you as a threat to his inheritance.” Debra knew Edgar’s thoughts intimately. She’d once wondered why Edgar had gone to such lengths to travel from Booton to Seamar City for Jade. This explained it.

“He won’t rest until you’re eliminated,” she said, patting his shoulder. “Be careful. He won’t make it easy for you.”
